Already a projected first-round draft pick before he ever set foot on the floor of the O'Connell Center, Florida center Patric Young has faced questions about when his time at Florida would be up before it ever really began.
With the Gators in the midst of last week's Southeastern Conference Tournament, it hardly seemed a fitting time to discuss his future. But Young did just that following Florida's second-round win against Alabama in New Orleans.
While fielding a question about winning the SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year award, Young said he couldn't wait to come back and win it again next year. Afterward, I followed up with him.
You said you want Scholar Athlete of the Year again next year, that means you’re coming back, right?
"Yeah"
100 percent?
"Yeah. I don’t know – Brad (Beal has) got a 3.9 (GPA) right now, so I gotta worry about him. Hopefully it'll stay within Florida’s hands though"
Do you think both of you will be back next year?
"I’ll be back. I don’t know about Brad, but I hope he is"
So 100 percent, I'm going to quote you on this, you’re back?

I posted the news on Twitter, but with stories to file by deadline, I hurried back to the media room to start writing without following up further. The next day, Jason Lieser of the Palm Beach Post asked Young to clarify why he made the decision to return to school for the 2012-13 season. This time, he was somewhat noncommital, saying, "I really haven't thought about it because the season's not over yet."
But today, during a post-practice session with the media, Young reportedly confirmed to Lieser that he intends to come back, thus ending the Dwight Howard-esque back and forth of the past week.
So there you have it. The Gators will have their big man back next season.
For Beal, the decision will not be made until the season is over. The deadline to declare for the NBA Draft is April 10.

That's good stuff Matt, good to hear it and i'm happy you showed the initiative to followup with him on the topic. Given the manna-from-Heaven gift Florida received when plucky Norfolk State beat Mizseczou, UF has a very good chance at the Sweet 16 and, really, Elite 8 if they play as they have been lately in "tournament play." Perhaps that run of success will instill the sense of collegial purpose in those 2 star student athletes to return for at least one more year. I hope, anyway.
That being said, shame on you for blatantly avoiding this blog. Whether by choice or dictated through some purported busy-like-a-one-legged-man-in-an-ass-kicking contest schedule, the time which has passed since your last post is too long. And you know it.
So ... stay on it, those of us who still check on occasion will support you if you maintain a consistent presence, undeerstandly difficult with the Dade Community College Hurricane "fans" on here.

Well if either of these players was ready for the NBA they would be dominating most of the competition. Neither does it with Beale being better. Both should come back and work on their games, both appear to be good students so they should enjoy college and get their degrees.

Good to hear Young wants to come back next season, hope Beal returns as well.
Vulcan, with the success exhibited by former Gators in the NBA it really doesn't matter that much how much they "dominate" in college, somehow that does not translate 100%. Beal may well jump ship, if so all the best to him.

Another Elite 8, very impressive especially in light of the way the season ended.
Didn't have the hardest second round game, but I'll take it and run.
Billy D is 0-6 versus Pitino, but the little i've seen of Louisville this year, they struggle with disciplined defense efforts.
Great run for hoops team.
Baseball boys finally lost, no shame to it happening to the UF baseball nemises of late, USCe.
