Miami-Dade gay activist Luis Penelas, 53, dies of pancreatic cancer

Luis Penelas and other Democrats protest during the 2000 presidential election recount. Penelas, 53, died late Tuesday of pancreatic cancer.

1953 – 2006

A nationally respected civil activist, preservationist, community leader and spokesperson for LGBT issues, HIV/AIDS and civil rights, Mr. Penelas served on various community boards, as well as on the Board of Advisors of Unity Coalition/Coalicion Unida.

Always outspoken and often controversial, Luis was a leader, friend and a bright light in our community. He will be greatly missed.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, his partner Ashley and all of his friends.

Thursday at 1 pm - Religious services at St. Brendan Church, Miami

Followed by burial services
