Theater review: 'Hairdresser' cutups churn lots of laughs

BY STEVE ROTHAUS srothaus@MiamiHerald.com

Guy Voss' troubles begin in grade school during the '60s, when the other boys call him ``Girl Guy.''

''Guy acts like a girl! Are you a girl?'' butch boy Billy teases effeminate Guy.

Then comes Guy's mean drama teacher, Mr. Toad, who won't cast him in a high school production of Flower Drum Song. ''Who would believe you opposite a woman?'' Mr. Toad asks our hero.

As Guy grows up, he is hardened. ''You can become a bitch or you can become a doormat,'' he says during The Last Hairdresser, a 2002 comedy by San Francisco playwright Doug Holsclaw that runs through Aug. 20 at Boom, a Wilton Manors dance club doubling as a theater.

Oprah and friend: We're not gay

From today's Miami Herald People column:

Oprah Winfrey and her friend Gayle King want to be clear: They're not gay.

In the August issue of O, the Oprah Magazine, the talk-show host explains that some people misunderstand her close friendship with King.

''I understand why people think we're gay,'' she says. ``There isn't a definition in our culture for this kind of bond between women. So I get why people have to label it -- how can you be this close without it being sexual?''

In a long article, Winfrey, 52, and King converse about their 30 years of friendship and ``four-times-a-day phone calls.''

The two friends say they would have no problem telling the public if they were in a sexual relationship.

''The truth is, if we were gay, we would tell you, because there's nothing wrong with being gay,'' King says.

Says Winfrey: ``Something about this relationship feels otherworldly to me, like it was designed by a power and a hand greater than my own. Whatever this friendship is, it's been a very fun ride.''

Gay surf flick to premiere at Philadelphia International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival

TAN LINES directed, produced and written by Sydney-based Ed Aldridge.

From the film festival website:

Strip down to your swimsuit and wax your board as surf and skateboarder culture receives a queer attitude when a cute surfer boy falls in love with his best friend’s brother.

Midget Hollows (Jack Baxter) is an Australian surfing and partying machine who has to share a bed with his mother in their small apartment. Feeling claustrophobic from such living conditions and small town life, Midget spends his time with his buddies surfing, harassing local townfolk, drinking and smoking a lot of weed. But when the naïve teenager meets Cass, the openly gay brother of his best friend, the duo begin a secret romance that his fellow surfer “dudes” might not approve of. Add in some peculiar activities at the McQuillan mansion, where Midget works part-time, and this could be a summer to remember for everyone involved. Featuring exciting skate/surf action and cast with gay/straight real-life surfers who aren’t shy about shedding their clothes or diving into the steamy sex scenes, Tan Lines is a vastly entertaining gay romance in the world of extreme sports. The leads are gorgeously sexy and you’ll see copious amounts of skin but, besides the “eye candy” factor, the story of Midget’s first romance is so dreamy that you will be applying the sunscreen for some hot summer fun in the sun. -- Lewis Tice
