"Yet as the victor in last November's sharply contested race for Miami Beach city commissioner, he's also this burg's first-ever openly gay elected official. It's a historic step that's bound to inspire disbelief. After all, with the Beach's worldwide image as a 'gay mecca' burnished by popular films such as The Birdcage, late-night bacchanals such as the annual White Party, and a body-conscious social scene that has even the local straight boys obsessing over moisturizers, one would expect gays here to be running City Hall in 2007, not just taking their first seat at its seven-member dais."
