GLAAD applauds Rebelde singer Christian Chávez for coming out
News release:
The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) applauded Latino artist and member of Rebelde (RBD) Christian Chávez for coming out publicly as gay. Chávez came out in a statement posted on the group’s Web site, and urged his fans not to judge him for being honest and to appreciate diversity.
GLAAD encourages Chávez to be a role model for millions of LGBT youth who are struggling with their sexual orientation and gender identity. “We applaud Christian's courage to come out and live an open and honest life,” said Mónica Taher, GLAAD People of Color Media Strategy Director. “We know that this is not easy given the intolerant and homophobic climate that many lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people live in.”
RBD was formed out of Televisa’s daily drama “Rebelde,” which featured the group’s six members as the lead characters. The show followed the students at an elite boarding school in Mexico City who rebelled against their aristocratic classmates by starting a band. To date, RBD has become an immediate sensation throughout Latin America and with the Latino communities in the United States. In January 2005, RBD debuted its first album “Rebelde” and became an immediate phenomenon. When RBD followed with Nuestro Amor eight months later, the new disc shattered the record books by going platinum in just seven hours. The group has sold 9.5 million records and has performed at sold out concerts in Los Angeles and New York.
Chávez also expressed in his statement that he didn’t want to keep on lying to himself because of fear. GLAAD urges media professionals to look beyond the artist’s desire to live openly and explore the reasons why LGBT artists in communities of color have a hard time expressing their sexuality.
