Task Force's Foreman: Naugle wrong - MSM HIV cases in Broward declined; hetero cases went up

Matt Foreman, executive director the National Gay and Lesban Task Force, sent me this e-mail to share with readers:

One issue that hasn’t received much play – and is, frankly, more egregious than everything else – is his misrepresentation that Broward had the highest number of new MSM HIV cases last year in the nation – which led him questioning the convention and visitors bureau marketing to gay tourists.  This is – to me – even more egregious than the toilet idiocy.

It is exactly like Ruben Diaz (now a state senator, unfortunately) saying that the Gay Games should be barred from coming to NYC in 1994 because they would spread HIV. That caused such an uproar he was booted from the Civilian Complaint Review Board.

The number of new MSM HIV cases in Broward declined from 567 in 2005 to 459 in 2006 (-19%); the number of Heterosexual HIV cases increased from 130 in 2005 to 151 in 2006 (+16%). This is on page 13 of http://www.browardchd.org/Services/AIDS/SurveillanceData/BrowardEpiStats.pdf
