Cyndi Lauper to Help Launch PFLAG 'Straight for Equality' Project

By Bryan Ochalla, gaywired.com

CyndilauperWhen it comes to straight allies of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, they don’t get much better than singer, songwriter and actress Cyndi Lauper. Which is probably why Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) has enlisted the Grammy and Emmy Award winner to help the Washington, D.C.-based organization launch its new "Straight for Equality" ally project.

The project, to be unveiled at the PFLAG National Convention on Oct. 11 in Washington, D.C., is a multiyear initiative designed to tap into the vast audience of fair-minded Americans who want to more actively support equality in their daily lives but have yet to have the simple tools to effectively do so.

During the event, Lauper will endorse the project and take the “Straight for Equality” pledge. New polling data on straight allies also will be released during the convention, which will take place Oct. 11-14 at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.

Also scheduled for the convention: the 2007 PFLAG National Gala, during which three individuals will be recognized. Mitzi Henderson, a longtime PFLAG member, will be honored for her lifelong contributions to the organization; Bishop V. Gene Robinson will receive the Flag Bearer award for his outstanding courage and work in inclusion in faith communities; and the world's most widely syndicated columnist, Dear Abby, will receive PFLAG's first-ever Straight for Equality award.
