"By saying he was married in Vegas, it was a way to get free drinks," Sunshine said. "He never really got married. That's why there's no record of it."
Sunshine's acknowledgment that Bass' comments were meant to be facetious came after a clerk at the Clark County marriage license bureau said no license under Bass' name could be found in a search of records from 1974 to 2007. (Clark County encompasses Las Vegas.)
In a story posted Wednesday on the E! Online Web site, Bass, who's gay, was quoted as saying that he got hitched about seven years ago - and the bride was "just a friend."
Bass, part of former boy band 'N Sync, was amused by the story, Sunshine said.
The 28-year-old singer has been promoting his new memoir, "Out of Sync."
Here's the original Associated Press story:
Lance Bass, who is openly gay, says he once married a girlfriend in Las Vegas."People do stupid things in the heat of the moment," the 28-year-old singer told E! News in an article published Tuesday on its Web site. "I've been in Vegas where I've gotten married for like five minutes, but no one talks about it, though."
Bass, who was part of the boy band 'N Sync, says he got hitched in "1999 or 2000," and the bride was "just a friend."
"In fact, the only reason we did it is because we wanted to get free drinks all night ... and we didn't get one," he says. "We're like, 'we just got married,' and they're like, 'ah, whatever.'"
Bass, who has been promoting his new memoir, "Out of Sync," can now be seen on Broadway in the long-running musical "Hairspray." He stepped into the role of TV dance show host Corny Collins in August.
Bass announced in July 2006 that he is gay. He has said that he didn't reveal this earlier because he didn't want to affect 'N Sync's popularity.
