Northern Trust to finance new Gay & Lesbian Community Center 'Campus' in Wilton Manors

GAY & LESBIAN COMMUNITY CENTER (GLCC)

The GLCC Board of Directors is pleased to announce receipt of loan commitment from the prestigious banking institution, Northern Trust, to finance the purchase of the property being referred to as "The Campus".  This remarkable property, located at 2040 North Dixie Highway in Wilton Manors, Florida will be the new home for the GLCC (Gay and Lesbian Community Center of South Florida) and is now scheduled to close on June 27, 2008.  Loan commitment and completion of thorough inspections by the GLCC mark the end of the "due diligence" period in the contract and sends a clear signal the GLCC is proceeding to close on the purchase of this property.

This historic transaction and contract is being managed on behalf of the GLCC by attorney William Karney, of Moraitis, Cofar, Karney and Moraitis on a pro-bono basis, as a service to our LGBT community.  The GLCC recognizes and thanks the efforts of its Finance and Building Committee members, particularly Nicole Mannarino, GLCC Treasurer; Tyler Healis, GLCC Building Committee Chair; and Dale Russell GLCC Board Member and our lead pro-bono realtor on the project whose Century 21 Hansen Realty commission will be donated to the GLCC.  This project has required a tremendous amount of time and effort on the part of a dedicated team, which will have a profound and positive impact on our community for years to come.

WASHINGTON, May 22 — Hundreds of pro-lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) faith leaders will converge on New Orleans, La., Sept. 4–7, for Many Stories, One Voice, the premier gathering of pro-LGBT Christians.

Many Stories, One Voice provides a rare and unique opportunity for pro-LGBT Christians to build relationships, and offers rich Bible study, challenging and profound worship and praise, concrete skills-building, strategic action and reflective and incisive theological analysis. This is in part designed to grow the number of Christian churches that are welcoming and affirming of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.

The conference will offer new tools and training in the areas of faith-based community organizing, media training, board development, fund-raising, research, biblical studies, theology, capacity-building and other concrete skills. Participants will also engage in discussions about issues of race, class, ability, age, embodiment, gender identity and sexual orientation.

“Many Stories, One Voice is a gathering of these extravagantly welcoming Christians, in all their identities. While this conference is rooted in Christian tradition, all are welcome,” said Voelkel. “To be Christian is to be called to live God’s extravagant welcome in the world. And there are hundreds of thousands of faithful Christians living out this vision. There are hundreds of thousands of pro-LGBT Christians who are African American, Latino/a, Asian American and Pacific Islander, European American and First Nations People. There are hundreds of thousands of pro-LGBT Christians who are of every age, class, ability, gender and orientation.”

Many Stories, One Voice is convened by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, in partnership with more than 30 pro-LGBT Christian organizations, from progressive, moderate and conservative traditions.

Appeals court rules in favor of decorated Air Force major discharged on grounds of sexual orientation

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit today reinstated a lawsuit challenging the dismissal of Major Margaret Witt, a decorated U.S. Air Force flight nurse, on grounds that she engaged in homosexual conduct. The ACLU is representing Major Witt in appealing a lower court ruling that rejected the suit in July 2006.

The Court of Appeals ruled that the Air Force must prove that discharging Major Witt is necessary for purposes of military readiness. While the ruling leaves in place the military’s “Don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, the court found that before discharging a soldier, the military must prove that the individual’s conduct actually hurt morale or jeopardized another government interest. The case has been remanded to federal district court in Tacoma to consider the case under the appellate court’s standard of review.

“Major Margaret Witt has been an exemplary member of the military with a distinguished record of service. To discharge her simply because of her sexual orientation is unfair to her and also is unwise for the military, which needs her skills,” said ACLU of Washington Executive Director Kathleen Taylor.

“I am thrilled by the court’s recognition that I can’t be discharged without proving that I was harmful to morale. I want to serve my country. I have loved being in the military – my fellow airmen have been my family. I am proud of my career and want to continue doing my job,” said Major Witt. “Wounded people never asked me about my sexual orientation. They were just glad to see me there,” she added.

In reaching its ruling, the Court of Appeals said: 

We hold that when the government attempts to intrude upon the personal and private lives of homosexuals, in a manner that implicates the rights identified in Lawrence [v. Texas], the government must advance an important governmental interest, the intrusion must significantly further that interest, and the intrusion must be necessary to further that interest. In other words, for the third factor, a less intrusive means must be unlikely to achieve substantially the government’s interest.

The Court emphasized that generalized or hypothetical assertions about the impact of gay and lesbian service members would not be sufficient.  As the case goes forward, the trial court “must determine not whether [the policy requiring discharge of gay and lesbian service members] has some hypothetical, post hoc rationalization in general, but whether a justification exists for the application of the policy as applied to Major Witt.”

A 1986 graduate of Pacific Lutheran University, Major Margaret Witt is a flight nurse and operating room nurse assigned to McChord Air Force Base near Tacoma. During her 19-year career in the Air Force, Major Witt has served in the Persian Gulf, has received many medals and commendations, and has always had superb evaluations from her superiors. In 1993, she was selected to be the “poster child” for the Air Force Nurse Corps recruitment flyer.

Major Witt served in Oman during Operation Enduring Freedom and received a medal from President Bush, who noted that she had delivered “outstanding medical care” to injured service members and that her “outstanding aerial accomplishments …  reflect great credit upon herself and the United States Air Force.”  In 2003, Major Witt received another medal for saving the life of a Defense Department employee who collapsed aboard a government chartered flight from Bahrain.

From 1997 to 2003, Major Witt was in a committed relationship with another woman, a civilian.  In the summer of 2004, Major Witt was notified that the Air Force had begun an investigation into an allegation that she had engaged in homosexual conduct. In November 2004, Major Witt was placed on unpaid leave and told she could no longer

participate in any military duties, pending formal separation proceedings. In March 2006, the Air Force informed Major Witt that she was being administratively discharged on grounds of homosexual conduct.

The lawsuit seeks to reverse the Air Force decision to discharge Major Witt, and to prevent it from otherwise hampering her military career. The military has provided no evidence that her sexual orientation or conduct has caused a problem in the performance of her military duties. To the contrary, the ACLU submitted declarations from military colleagues testifying that her forced absence is harmful to her unit’s morale.

The Air Force Reserves has had a critical shortage of flight nurses. At the rank of Major, the Air Force Reserves as of April 4, 2006 had 121 vacancies for flight nurses. 

Attorneys for the ACLU are James Lobsenz of Carney Badley Spellman and ACLU-WA staff attorney Aaron Caplan. In a previous ACLU case, Lobsenz represented Army Sgt. Perry Watkins, who challenged his dismissal from the military for being gay. In 1989, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit ruled that, as a matter of fairness, the Army could not discharge Watkins.

The spinmaster is one of the hottest imports from Israel since Wissotzky Tea, but credits his skills behind the turntables to the time he spent perfecting his talent in Europe.

DJ Oren's sound is a fusion of tribal beats and funky house, with a tinge of soul over sexy vocals reminiscent of a summer spent sipping mojitos and dancing the night away in Ibiza. He kicked off the start of his career spinning in some of Israel's largest nightclubs. In addition, this mixing marvel was a resident DJ of Tel Aviv's most popular radio station and hosted his own highly rated radio program called In My House. Naughty and witty Mark Lowe is a multi-talented nightlife impresario who is better known in the South Florida nightlife industry as Mark of KA. Born in England and raised in California, Mark's stunning looks and natural sex- appeal almost forced him to start a modeling career when he was seventeen years old. Unfortunately, a snowboarding accident ended this episode of his life, but led him to start his studies in his next passion, art and interior design. Mark enrolled at the prestigious American River College in Sacramento, CA , and he graduated with honors. This former Wilhemina star's taste and unparalleled talent and skills can be easily perceived. Just to have a coffee or a short conversation with him is a journey of its own that explains his life experience and desires. He has been around the globe just as much as his art.

"I started sculpting in my early twenties, and I sold a good amount of large scale sculptures worldwide", explained the intense blond artist, as he continued: "My celebrity clients are endless and they include names such as Michael Jordan, David Geffen and Lenny Kravitz". In 2000, Mark moved to South Florida with the purpose of opening his own furniture line and his interior design firm, businesses that he has been running with a lot of notoriety. It's a rare quality possessed by a person who never quits.Talent without willful force is simply useless", he says.

Since then, Lowe has been constantly traveling in and outside the United States designing a variety of challenging projects ranging from European mansions and world-class nightclubs to high- end lounges and contemporary buildings. His expertise, personality and demanding touch have put together blow away productions. As accomplished as Mark is, a different venture caught his interest around one year ago as he invested time and effort to refresh the nightlife industry in Fort Lauderdale.

"I decided to get involved with the nightlife industry because I wasn't seeing what I wanted to see", Mark stated, and he continued, "It was the same spaces, same ideas, same concepts. Thorughout history, gay people have been on the creative forefront, and that didn't reflect in the Fort Lauderdale scene. To be able to express myself artistically from the performances to our space was too powerful to resist". And Mark along with his business partners started KA Wednesdays and KA Fridays with tremendous success, once again.

"The scene today is very predictable. Everyone is hungry for something unique and different. The future of nightlife is lounges, not mega-clubs. The multi-format venue is what people want, a space to satisfy all tastes under one roof. We took a few months off just to acquire our own club. I am completely proud and honored to be part of the creation of our new venue Living Room. It will be a benchmark for Florida. We promise things never witnessed in a nightclub before and our main goal is to carry our revolutionary KA concept nationally", Mark emphasized. PORTLAND, Ore. -- Commissioner Sam Adams easily won the Portland mayoral race, making this city the largest in the U.S. to ever elect an openly gay mayor.

Adams avoided a November runoff by winning 58 percent of the vote with more than 80 percent of the ballots counted Tuesday night. Businessman Sho Dozono had 34 percent and almost a dozen minor candidates split the rest.

Adams, 44, said his main goals for the city are to improve the economy, reduce the dropout rate in public schools and prepare for the influx of people moving to the region.

The mayor-elect's sexual orientation was never an issue in the contest, but Adams was aware of the history he was widely expected to make.

"I'm running not to be a gay mayor, but a great mayor," he said after delivering his victory speech. "But I'm very cognizant, very aware that I'm the first openly gay mayor of a major American city. That's a real honor."

Adams seemed equally proud that he was able to rise from a small town to become the mayor of Oregon's biggest city: "I used to deliver The Oregonian as a newspaper boy in Newport, Ore.; I never thought I'd ever actually be in it."

Known as a policy wonk and City Hall insider, Adams served as chief aide to Mayor Vera Katz for more than a decade before getting elected to the Portland City Council in 2004. He will replace Tom Potter, who announced last September he would not run for a second term. Under Portland's commission form of government, the mayor and four city commissioners share executive branch duties.

With a population of more than 500,000, Portland is by far the largest city in a state that in 2004 voted to amend its constitution to declare that marriage is only legal when it's between a man and a woman.

Asked if it was odd that he can be mayor - but not married - in Oregon, Adams said it was "surreal."

"With the position of mayor comes life and death authority and responsibility in running a police force, emergency preparedness system and fire departments," he said. "But gay folks still can't be trusted to be married."

DeGeneres needles McCain on gay marriage

WASHINGTON -- Republican John McCain says same-sex couples should be allowed to enter into legal agreements for insurance and other purposes, but he opposes gay marriage and believes in "the unique status of marriage between and man and a woman."

"And I know that we have a respectful disagreement on that issue," the likely Republican presidential nominee said in an interview to air Thursday on "The Ellen DeGeneres show."

McCain, who also opposes an amendment to the Constitution to ban same-sex unions, said people should be encouraged to enter into legal agreements, particularly for insurance and other areas where decisions need to be made.

DeGeneres needled McCain on the issue, arguing that she and the senator from Arizona aren't different.

Last week, after the California Supreme Court cleared the way for gay marriage in that state, DeGeneres announced on her program her engagement to longtime girlfriend Portia de Rossi.

"We are all the same people, all of us. You're no different than I am. Our love is the same," she said. "When someone says, 'You can have a contract, and you'll still have insurance, and you'll get all that,' it sounds to me like saying, 'Well, you can sit there, you just can't sit there.'

"It feels like we are not, you know, we aren't owed the same things and the same wording," DeGeneres said.

McCain said he's heard her "articulate that position in a very eloquent fashion. We just have a disagreement. And I, along with many, many others, wish you every happiness."

DeGeneres steered the conversation back toward the humor she's known for.

"So, you'll walk me down the aisle? Is that what you're saying?" she asked.

"Touche," McCain said.

Slain man's mother denounces principal who resigned in protest of gay-straight alliance

Hospital worker performed oral sex on sedated patient

A Mount Sinai Medical Center employee surrendered Wednesday after police say he performed oral sex on a male patient who was just waking up from anesthesia following surgery.

Pedro J. Gonzalez, 27, of Hialeah, confessed and was charged with sexual battery, Miami Beach police said.

Gonzalez, whose job is to transport patients within the hospital, was immediately fired after the April 30 incident.

The 31-year-old patient had gone to Mount Sinai, 4300 Alton Rd., on April 30 for surgery. Gonzalez wheeled the patient from a recovery room to a standard room and helped him on the bed.

According to a police report, ''he began to perform oral sex'' on the patient, who pushed him away. The patient later told detectives that ``even though he was coming off the effects of the anesthesia, he can ID [the suspect] and was aware of the act.''

The police report said Gonzalez came back to the room twice to ''check on'' him.

After a nurse ignored his complaint, the patient called Miami Beach police, according to a report.

''Even an isolated incident is unacceptable. We worked very closely with the Miami Beach Police on this matter, and will continue to assist the authorities until a proper resolution is achieved,'' spokeswoman Pamela Gadinsky said in a statement.

``The safety and security of our patients, staff and visitors is paramount.''

Why do gay men love Judy Garland? 'Good taste'

This week, I showed off a copy of the new Judy Garland compact disc, Judy Takes Broadway!, a collection of Broadway songs she recorded for her 1963-64 CBS variety show.

Deputy Features Editor Terry Jackson asked: "Why do gay men love Judy Garland?"

Good question. I called an expert, Garland historian John Fricke, who assembled the Broadway CD and wrote its liner notes:

Why do gay men love Garland? "Good taste,'' Fricke said. "This music harks back to when everyone had good taste."

He acknowledged that although many gay men do love Garland, her fame continues to transcend a single demographic.

Fricke said Jackson has "bought into the stereotypes."

"If that were the only audience, her career would have lasted six months," Fricke said.

Garland's appeal "remains cross-generational,'' Fricke said.

Besides, he added, "the mass gay audience is so busy being foolishly trendy as the straight audience."

"Follow the trend. Very few entertainers have transcended all of that," he said.

Thirty nine years after her death, Garland has. "I don't say that now as a fan," Fricke said. "I say that as someone who's working the mine for the last 20 years.'

Fricke has spent decades writing about Garland and maintaining her legacy as the "World's Greatest Entertainer."  (The title of one of Fricke's books.) "Hopefully to present it well and in a classy way,'' he said.

Fricke has also helped prepare many of Garland's most famous films for DVD, including The Wizard of Oz, Meet Me in St. Louis and the movies she made with Mickey Rooney (including Babes in Arms and Girl Crazy.)

Judy Takes Broadway is the fifth CD of songs from The Judy Garland Show on Savoy Jazz since 2004. Among the tracks: Sail Away, Get Me to the Church on Time, The Party's Over, a Kismet medley (with Vic Damone) and Hey, Look Me Over!

"These CDs have been a pleasure," Fricke said, praising Savoy Jazz. "They've been very gracious to me. They've given me full control. 'What songs do you want? What order do you want? What pictures should we use?' They've done it with the right art work. We're not looking at pictures of her from MGM. It's all being done with as much class as the output deserves." (The disc can also be downloaded at Amazon.com or iTunes.)

So what's left of the Garland archive that hasn't been digitally (and commercially) released?

"A lot of rare radio stuff that would need a lot of cleaning up, so much so it would be [cost] prohibitive," Fricke said.

Most of her films are already on DVD, along with the complete Judy Garland Show. There's still enough material from the TV series to produce a few more CDs, he said.

In 2009, Garland's most famous film will be released on home video in high definition.

"Next year will be the 40th anniversary of her passing and the 70th anniversary of Oz. Wizard of Oz will be released on Blu-ray,'' Fricke said.
