Obama opposes Amendment 2, 'Marriage Protection Amendment'
News release:
Obama Campaign Tells Florida Red and Blue He Opposes “Marriage Protection Amendment”
Miami – Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Senator Barack Obama opposes Amendment 2, the Florida Marriage Protection Amendment, his campaign told Florida Red and Blue. Red and Blue is the bipartisan statewide organization fighting Amendment 2 through the Say No 2 campaign.
The consequences of Amendment 2 are clear: it would limit the rights of unmarried, committed adults involved in domestic partnerships, and eliminate their ability to share health care and pension benefits. Even unmarried senior citizens would be severely impacted. Further, Amendment 2 could stifle the growth of business in our state by making it less attractive for companies to relocate here, and could threaten Florida’s multi-billion dollar tourism industry.
Michigan’s Supreme Court ruled last month that a similar amendment passed there in 2004 does in fact prohibit public employers such as universities and cities from extending benefits to domestic partners.
In opposing Amendment 2, Senator Obama joins more than 200 Florida leaders who oppose the amendment, including six members of Congress, Florida CFO Alex Sink, the League of Women Voters, the NAACP and the Florida Education Association.
Obama’s likely opponent, Senator John McCain, opposed a federal “marriage amendment” and has previously stated that these amendments are state issues. Senator McCain did support and campaign for a 2006 amendment in Arizona that is similar to Florida Amendment 2 in that it would have banned workplace and other benefits for unmarried couples. The Arizona amendment is the only one in the nation to be rejected by voters.
