October 6th - Alice Walker
Alice Walker is an award-winning writer, activist and self-proclaimed "Womanist." Best known for her novel "The Color Purple," Walker was the first African-American woman to receive a Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.
October 7th - Greg Louganis

The winner of five Olympic medals, Greg Louganis is the world's most successful diver. His best-selling autobiography "Breaking the Surface" recounts his experiences as an openly gay athlete living with HIV.
October 8th - Bertrand Delanoe
In 2001, when Bertrand Delanoƫ was elected mayor of Paris, the city became the world's largest to have an openly gay mayor. On the topic of gay marriage, Delanoƫ writes, "In the name of what can one reject this demand for equality?"
October 9th - Margaret Mead

Margaret Mead was an innovative cultural anthropologist who brought public attention to the field. In 1979, she was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor.
October 10th - Mark Bingham
On 9/11, Mark Bingham led the charge against terrorists on United Flight 93. His heroism saved lives and prevented destruction in the nation's capital.
October 11th - Cleve Jones
Cleve Jones was among the first to respond to the AIDS epidemic. He conceived the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt, which memorializes more than 44,000 lives.
October 12th - Jann Wenner
Jann Wenner changed rock and contemporary music coverage when he launched Rolling Stone magazine. His eye for talent, knack for business and passion for music has kept the magazine on the cutting edge for more than 40 years.
