TV star Sharon Gless (Queer as Folk, Burn Notice) and gay Army Lt. Dan Choi, who recently was arrested for chaining himself to a White House fence during a "don't ask, don't tell'' protest, will be grand marshals of the April 17 Miami Beach Gay Pride parade.
"Dan is a good symbol for what is important, not only for our community but for the country. He speaks Arabic. Why would we discharge someone who speaks Arabic at this point?" says Miami Beach Gay Pride executive director Cindy Brown. "Sharon, of course, back in the Cagney and Lacey days, was a lesbian icon, even though she isn't a lesbian and they weren't lesbians in the show. All of us lesbians imagined that they were."
Gless lives on Fisher Island. "Not only is she supportive of our community, she's part of our community," Brown says.
The noon parade starts on Ocean Drive at Fifth Street. A festival continues between 10th and 14th streets.
