Statement by Nadine Smith, executive director for Equality Florida, on historic floor debate on Florida’s discriminatory ban on adoption by gay and lesbian parents:
For the first time in 33 years, the silence has been broken in both the Florida House and Senate with lawmaker strongly condemning Florida’s discriminatory and harmful ban on adoption by gay and lesbian prospective parents.
While fair-minded legislators spoke passionately about the thousands of children awaiting adoption in Florida who would benefit from repeal, not one single lawmaker rose to defend the current discriminatory law.
This ban is eroding in the courts and, with yesterday’s opportunity to debate, legislator appear unwilling or unable to defend the law. Florida stands alone as the only state in the nation with an adoption ban that is both morally reprehensible and rationally indefensible.
