FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Sunshine Republicans congratulate and applaud Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen for her acceptance of the “Voices for Equality” Award by Equality Florida last weekend in Miami.
Congresswoman Ros-Lehtinen has been an unwavering champion of equality under law. She continues to inspire conservatives and the Gay and Lesbian community through her leadership on issues of equality and compassion for Americans of all walks of life.
Her work as a member of the LGBT Equality Caucus has helped to pass the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, offering specific protections to gay and lesbian Americans. According to South Florida Gay News, she is the lead Republican sponsor on the Employment Non-Discrimination Act and other acts designed to prevent discrimination against gays and lesbians. She also supports the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”
As a shining example of leadership, Congresswoman Ros-Lehtinen stands up for what she believes is right even if it’s unpopular in her own party. She is an inspirational reminder that conservative values are compatible with equality under law. We honor her service and congratulate her for acknowledgement.
