More than 300 gay-rights supporters came to an Equality Florida fundraiser Sunday at the Epic Hotel in downtown Miami, where U.S. Reps. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Miami, and Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Weston, each received a Voice for Equality Award.
The congresswomen both were in Washington to vote for the healthcare bill and couldn’t attend the party in person. Instead, they recorded a thank you video in which they pledged support for ends to ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ and Florida’s gay adoption ban. (Wasserman Schultz’s daughters, Rebecca, 10, and Shelby, 6, accepted her award.)
Speakers included Equality Florida Executive Director Nadine Smith and Florida state Sen. Dan Gelber, a longtime Equality Florida supporter. The group raised a record $101,050, according to Deputy Director Stratton Pollitzer.
