South Florida author Deon Davis on Saturday read from her book, I'll Find a Way: A Mother's Journey of Love and Acceptance for Her Gay Son at Books & Books at Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale, One E. Las Olas Blvd.
I introduced Davis, who attended the reading with son Rashad, now a 20-year-old theater student. Plenty of relatives came to support the Davis family, including Rashad's cousin, Omavi Waite, 16, who read this poem he wrote about bullying:
"its the way we say things.......and do things .......that make our out put what it is...........and when we are or we have....the power to put fear in the hearts of a lower opponent .......and when the fear strikes that opponent..........its like there world crumble's up like potato chip crumbs or just shatter like a glass bowl penetrating the hard surface of your tile floor..........its when the higher power beats down.....on the lower....power.......in which this is all around the world........known as bullying.........beating down senselessly on your opponent who has no control over your output to there body either physical or emotional being.......its when she or he is tormented by the basic vocabulary of a higher being........and which these words strikes her heart and feel's her world with sorrow and pain...every time she walks across a path of higher powers...............in which after the fact that the damage is done.........her life is defeated and she is filled with dread and needs to go home and lay in her bed........for she waits for tomorrow's miseries ....and leaves this day behind also known to her as history that will change her mental image on the world forever....afraid of life it self she just thinks everyday is a road to great depression.....and also even desperation ....of help......and need......to be free......from this curse that is brought upon her by her kind.......the power has broken her ways and words of calls and help and has left her hopelessness.......this sad piece of mines is and always and will forever be known as....the horrifying ...terrible trembling words that spell....bullying"
