News release from Aqua Foundation for Women:
Miami (July 27, 2011)
Twelve promising young women were recently selected by Aqua Foundation for Women, an organization dedicated to increasing the wellness and equality of lesbian, bisexual and transgender women, to receive scholarships recognizing their academic success and their commitment to giving back to our community. Recipients of the scholarships came from the tri-county area of Broward, Miami-Dade, and for the first time Palm Beach county. The women awarded the scholarships hale from a wide array of disciplines and are well suited to contributing to the LBT community through the avenues of social work, law, education, politics, and therapy. Scholarships ranged in size from $2,500 - $4,000, with a total of $40,000 dollars granted by the foundation.
It is the foundation's belief that these awards enable young women in our community to more easily pursue their education and activist work due to greater financial freedom and flexibility. Indeed, many of our past recipients have found that to be the case, including Enbar Cohen, who was able to more fully participate in Safe Schools Florida after receiving the Aqua scholarship. The foundation looks forward to continuing to support LBT women in the community through this scholarship fund.
