Suspect arrested in Washington, D.C., shooting of transgender woman

Associated Press

WASHINGTON -- District of Columbia police have arrested a 20-year-old man who they say shot a transgender female.

Police say 20-year-old Darryl Willard of northeast Washington surrendered Tuesday and was charged with assault with intent to kill while armed.

Police say the woman he's accused of shooting went into a police station on Monday around 2 a.m. to report she was wounded while walking in the city's Southeast section. Police say the victim knows the suspect and is expected to survive.

The shooting is the latest in a series of attacks in recent months that have victimized transgender people in the District of Columbia and raised concerns through the community of transgender, gay and lesbian people.
