News release from Hands 2 Help:
MIAMI – When hundreds of children gather in American Legion Park on Saturday, December 17, it will be part of a much larger effort that is transforming the lives of at-risk youth in Miami/Dade County.
Hands 2 Help, which has served local at-risk youth for the past 14 years under the leadership of executive director Camille Jones, has organized the event known as Holiday Cheers for Children. The festivities will run from noon to 4 p.m. providing at-risk youth the opportunity to receive gifts, enjoy a variety of activities and presentations, and be exposed to a community of people who care about them and their futures.
“Holiday Cheers for Children is a wonderful opportunity for the local community to come together and support a great cause this holiday season,” said Marty Davis, Founder of Legal Solutions Group and board member of Hands 2 Help. “Together with our supporters, we will make sure that these kids not only receive holiday gifts, but are also treated a real holiday atmosphere that celebrates them and their value as people.”
As part of the event, children will have access to a collection of more than 1,500 toys, from which they can choose their own gifts. In addition, Holiday Cheers for Children will include live and recorded music, a magician, popcorn, cotton candy, a bounce house, basketball and other fun attractions.
One of the top features of the day will be a dance performance by members of Passage 2 Womanhood, which is another Hands 2 Help program. Passage 2 Womanhood, which is open to girls ages 8 to 18, is a mentoring program that meets four nights a week in Overtown. Girls in the program are given guidance in reaching educational goals, gaining self-esteem while learning about modern dance and nutrition. They also take bi-weekly field trips to experience local attractions and see colleges.
“It is always a proud moment when my girls can show the community what they’ve learned, and demonstrate what outstanding young women they are growing into,” said Camille Jones, who founded Hands 2 Help.
Hands2Help also operates a college awareness program Knowledge 4 College for at-risk youth.
Although Hands2Help receives grant money from The Women’s Fund and the Rosalyn Ludwig Children’s Foundation, it is heavily reliant on donations from community members. Those who would like to donate can contact the organization at 786.417.2152, or donate online at www.hands2helpinc.org.
