Miami-Dade, Broward hate crimes down in 2010; crimes based on sexual orientation lead Broward

The number of hate crimes reported in Florida last year nearly matched 2009’s record low, suggesting criminal acts rooted in racial, religious or sexual animus could be on the wane in the state.

There were 149 instances of hate crimes reported to law enforcement in 2010, one more than in 2009 but way off the all-time high of 395 set in 1992, according to Florida attorney general’s annual hate-crimes report, released Tuesday.

Broward County again led the state in reported instances of hate crimes with 19 — three fewer than in 2009. One-quarter of all of Florida’s reported crimes motivated by sexual orientation occurred in the county.
