Today marks the fifth anniversary of Lisa Pond's death at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Her partner, Janice Langbehn, was not able to visit Pond in the hours before she died and the case led to national reforms regarding gay families and visitation rights.

"I would happily and easily give back the medal, the recognition from the president," Langbehn told me this week. "I would give back so much just to have those eight hours with her. Just to say goodbye."
