Barbra Streisand, James Brolin open their Malibu home for women's heart health fundraiser

MALIBU, Calif. -- In an elegant white tent nestled among the barn-shaped houses that dot her oceanfront compound, Barbra Streisand sang and former President Bill Clinton spoke to a crowd gathered to raise funds for women's heart health.
Comedian Martin Short was the master of ceremonies at the intimate fundraising dinner Thursday at the Malibu home Streisand shares with her husband, James Brolin.
Guests who paid as much as $100,000 per couple to support the Barbra Streisand Women's Heart Center enjoyed sweeping ocean views and the singer's blooming rose garden before sitting down to a "heart-healthy," gluten-free dinner of tofu, fish or grilled vegetables.
Streisand said she was motivated to contribute to women's heart health because she "can't stand inequality, whether it's about civil rights, gay rights or gender discrimination."
Heart disease kills more women each year than all cancers combined, but most of the research on the disease for the past five decades has been conducted on men.

SAVE Dade on Thursday held a reception at the Wolfsonian-FIU museum, 1001 Washington Ave., which is featuring the exhibit Graphic Intervention: 25 Years of International AIDS Awareness Posters 1985–2010 through Sept. 9, 2012.
From a Wolfsonian-FIU news release:
Graphic Intervention showcases over one hundred and fifty posters from forty-four countries, presenting a comprehensive overview of the diverse visual strategies employed by government agencies, community activists, grassroots organizations, and motivated citizens to educate the local population in response to HIV/AIDS. Almost all of the posters included in Graphic Intervention are part of the donation to The Wolfsonian—some of the posters that are not in the collection are being donated to the museum. The exhibition, which opens on May 11, 2012, is organized by the Massachusetts College of Art and Design.

Pentagon to mark gay pride month (with video)

In the latest remarkable sign of change since the military repealed the "don't ask, don't tell" policy, the Defense Department will soon hold its first event to recognize gay and lesbian troops. It comes nine months after repeal of the policy that had prohibited gay troops from serving openly and forced more than 13,500 service members out of the armed forces.
Details are still being worked out, but officials say Defense Secretary Leon Panetta wants to honor the contributions of gay service members.
"Now that we've repealed 'don't ask, don't tell,' he feels it's important to find a way this month to recognize the service and professionalism of gay and lesbian troops," said Navy Capt. John Kirby, a spokesman.
