Episcopal bishops OK gay blessing prayer, non-discrimination language for trans church members

BY RACHEL ZOLL, AP RELIGION WRITER

Episcopal bishops approved an official prayer service for blessing same-sex couples Monday at a national convention that also cleared the way for transgender ordination.

At the Episcopal General Convention in Indianapolis, the House of Bishops voted 111-41, with three abstentions, to authorize a provisional rite for same-sex unions for the next three years. The liturgy next goes to convention's deputies for their authorization.

In a separate vote Monday, the full convention approved new anti-discrimination language for transgendered clergy candidates and church members. Some dioceses already ordain transgendered people or elect them to positions of parish leadership. However, advocates for the amendment argued they needed an explicit statement of acceptance as the churchwide policy.

The Rev. Carla Robinson, who is transgender and a vicar of All Saints Church in Seattle, said she was lucky to have the backing of parishes and bishops when she was considering ordination, but she said others haven't had the same support.

"I stand here as a priest today because my diocese specifically said that my gender identity and expression didn't disqualify me from the discernment process," Robinson said from the floor of the convention. "I ask that as a church we do the same for my trans sisters and brothers."

Archie, pals to find 'Glee' in comic-book crossover

BY MATT MOORE, ASSOCIATED PRESS

PHILADELPHIA -- The kids from Riverdale are no strangers to high school angst, worries about fitting in or music. Neither are the teens from "Glee."

Now, Archie, Betty, Veronica and resident boy genius Dilton Doiley will match wits - and maybe a vocal or two - with the likes of Finn Hudson, Kurt Hummel and Rachel Berry in the pages of "Archie Comics," said Jon Goldwater, the co-chief executive officer.

Goldwater unveiled the planned collaboration - dubbed "Archie Meets Glee" - on Monday, ahead of Wednesday's start of Comic-Con in San Diego.

Bilingual Familia es Familia campaign launches to build Hispanic support for LGBT family members

News release from Freedom to Marry:

FAMILIAesFAMILIA-cinco copy LAS VEGAS -- Twenty-one of the nation’s leading Hispanic organizations announced today their endorsement of a first-of-its kind, comprehensive public-education campaign called Familia es Familia aimed at strengthening Latino voices to build support within the Latino community for acceptance of LGBT family members.

Public opinion polls show that Latinos really do lead the way when it comes to attitudes toward lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people. Several recent studies by the Pew Hispanic Center, Bendixen & Amandi International, 2012 Opportunity Agenda and SSRS found strong support among Hispanics for a number of LGBT issues.

Familia es Familia will be a bilingual campaign providing resources and information that are culturally appropriate to empower voices within and from Latino families and communities. In addition, the campaign will provide training, technical assistance, and support to the 21 Hispanic organizations and will spearhead a national effort to educate the public through a range of viral components including: an interactive bilingual website rich with videos, resources, and publications; social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube; promoting stories and voices in the media; and an organizing campaign to engage the community through their mobile devices.

"The polling shows that many in the Latino community already understand that there is one struggle for equality, a struggle that benefits from appreciating common mission. Familia es Familia is a campaign that will help to deepen the understanding that a discriminatory deprivation of rights on any basis is a cause of concern for all. Together, we can overcome all of the irrational biases that adversely affect any member of the Latino community," said Thomas A. Saenz, President and General Counsel, MALDEF.

“NCLR is deeply committed to the civil rights of all Americans, including our friends and family in the LGBT community. We are very proud that this ground-breaking public education campaign, ‘Familia es Familia’, is being launched at our Annual Conference this year in Las Vegas,” said Janet Murguia, President and CEO, NCLR.

Brent Wilkes, Executive Director of LULAC, the nation’s oldest Latino civil rights organization said, “Since its inception, LULAC has fought for the equality of minorities. All individuals regardless of their race, ethnicity, country of origin or sexual orientation, deserve equal rights.”

“A growing majority of Latinos in this country know that every gay or lesbian person is part of someone’s family – a son or daughter, a brother or sister, a loved one – and the more conversations we have, family member to family member, the more support for the freedom to marry grows,” said Evan Wolfson, founder and President of Freedom to Marry, the campaign to win marriage nationwide. “Latino gay couples seek the freedom to marry to affirm and strengthen their love, their commitment, and their ability to take care of each other and their families; government should not be putting barriers in their way. Freedom to Marry is proud to be supporting the Familia es Familia campaign to lift up Hispanic voices and stories as together we make the case for ending the exclusion from marriage.”

Freedom to Marry provided the seed funding and serves as fiscal sponsor for Familia es Familia. The Gill Foundation has also committed to providing additional resources.

“Given the breadth and depth of this first-of-its-kind campaign, this effort is so vital for our community, and we hope that it will helpto change the dialogue and hearts and minds about our Latino LGBT family and community Members,” said Ingrid Duran, Laura Esquivel and Catherine Pino, the D&P Creative Strategies team, the lead firm working with Freedom to Marry to create and manage the campaign.

Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes reach fast settlement in divorce case

BY JAKE COYLE, AP ENTERTAINMENT WRITER

NEW YORK -- Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes reached a settlement in their divorce, her attorney said Monday.

"The case has been settled and the agreement has been signed," Holmes attorney Jonathan Wolfe said in a statement. An assistant in Wolfe's office who would not give her name would not elaborate on the agreement.

"We are thrilled for Katie and her family and are excited to watch as she embarks on the next chapter of her life," the statement said. "We thank Tom's counsel for their professionalism and diligence that helped bring about this speedy resolution."

Holmes filed for divorce less than two weeks ago, putting an end to the romance that began in 2005. The couple has a 6-year-old daughter, Suri.

Lesbian drama-comedy 'Baby GirL' runs July 13-Aug. 5 at Empire Stage in Fort Lauderdale

Baby_GirL_photo Empire Stage in Fort Lauderdale and Kutumba Theatre Project are teaming up to present the world premiere of Baby GirL, a true-life comedy-drama written and directed by Kim Ehly.

From Ehly's news release:

Baby GirL was conceived by Kim Ehly in a writing workshop held by Connie Congdon in New York City, in conjunction with a personal monologue exercise in a Strasberg scene study class in New York City. The monologue was supposed to be two pages long, but ended up being seventeen and half pages…and so, a play was born. A reading of Baby GirL, while in its development stage, was met with great applause at the New Theatre in Coral Gables. The screenplay version of Baby GirL placed as a finalist at the NewFest Film Festival in New York City.

About Baby GirL: What if you were conceived twice in one lifetime: once by the illegitimate passionate sex of a young couple in love, and next by a "missionary position" lovemaking, conservative couple who long to have a child but the "little guys" never make it to the egg? What if you were adopted by the married couple, only to find out you are everything they can't stand...I mean, understand?

After being coming out as a lesbian and being alienated by her adoptive family, Ashley, a spirited young daydreamer, goes on an extraordinary journey to find love and a place to call home. When Ashley's fantasies meet reality, expect the unexpected!

Baby GirL runs July 13 – August 5, Fri and Sat at 8pm and Sun at 5pm. Preview performance on July 12 at 8pm. All performances are at Empire Stage, 1140 North Flagler Dr. Fort Lauderdale, FL 33304. Phone number 954-678-1496. For tickets visit: www.smarttix.com or www.empirestage.com

Starring: Sally Bondi, Clay Cartland, Miki Edelman, David R. Gordon, Noah Levine, Nori Tecosky. Jessica Welch, and Lindsey Forgey as ASHLEY.
WARNING: This play contains ADULT CONTENT.

About Kutumba Theatre Project: Baby GirL is the first production for Kutumba Theatre Project. Kim Ehly, founder of Kutumba Theatre Project, is a 28 year veteran of the theatre and has worked in film, tv, and theatre in NYC, LA, and South Florida. Kutumba has various meanings in many languages and they all resonate with the mission of the Kutumba Theatre Project. Kutumba: to leap, to strut proudly, a unique bond amongst community members, family or kin. Kutumba Theatre Project is a collective focusing on works and the development of works that give a voice to the LGBT community, women's interests, and other under served communities.

About Empire Stage: (http://www.empirestage.com/) Empire Stage is an artist-driven collective that produces new and existing works for the diverse audiences of Fort Lauderdale, including the LGBT community and senior population.
Given the common missions of Kutumba Theatre Project and Empire Stage, teaming up for the production of Baby GirL is a natural partnership. Baby GirL has all the elements to engage audiences and give focus to the LGBT community, as well as the adoption population, and lovers of the theatre in general.

Lesbian U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin looks to end Democrats' Wisconsin losing streak in Senate race

BY SCOTT BAUER, ASSOCIATED PRESS

FRIENDSHIP, Wis. -- Rep. Tammy Baldwin stood in the Friendship Cafe, giving voters a populist pitch for why she should be elected to keep Wisconsin's open Senate seat in Democratic hands, where it's been for the last 55 years.

When she began to field questions, a 70-year-old retiree offered the first comment, and hit on one of the most difficult issues confronting Baldwin as she tries to break the Democrats' recent losing streak in the battleground state.

"I'm not sure how to deal with your situation of who you love and who your partner is," said Harry Davis, a retired Internal Revenue Service worker.

For Baldwin, the first openly gay candidate elected to Congress, questions about her sexuality evoke her reputation as an unabashed liberal and a product of left-leaning Madison, and reinforce concerns about her viability in the more conservative parts of the state she'll need to win the Senate seat in November.
