Arts at St. Johns is launching "Teens for Equality," an artistic performance ensemble of select youth from age 13 to 19. Teens for Equality is a visible presence and platform for youth to express their individuality, personality, and talent.
"Be Who You Are" is the official launch of this project. The youth will be presenting in song, dance and acting, as well as the spoken word. The project is directed by Lloyd Reshard, Interim Executive Director of Arts at St. Johns, along with Christina Alexander as Drama Coach and Hamilton Gutierrez as Music Coach and Pianist.
The youth performers are the program's leadership group and the seeds for growing a larger performance troupe of teens. The presentation will touch on social issues such as teen sex, bullying, LGBTQA issues, environmental concerns and more.
The mission of Teens for Equality is to show that LGBTQ and Allied youth can stand up in the face of injustice through performance and visual art. The program also helps teens to have a positive impact in teen issues, human rights and equality in South Florida.
After the performance, there will be a reception to meet the youth, director, and coaches and to begin encouraging youth to be an influence for social change.
"Be Who You Are" is premiering at the iconic St. Johns United Methodist Church, which is one of two Florida Methodist churches that is "Reconciling," meaning that the church openly welcomes ALL people regardless of race, sexual orientation, physical capability, or economic status. The program has received a City of Miami Beach Cultural Affairs Gala grant.
For more information about acquiring an invitation to the event, contact Lloyd Reshard at 786-309-1275 or by email artsatstjohnsMB@gmail.com. Parking is onsite and free.
