LBT Women of Color Health Expo 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, at Pride Center in Wilton Manors

ARROW (Area Resource and Referral Organization for Women) and Rainbow Ladies - Our Space will present a Women of Color Health Expo for lesbian, bisexual, transgender women (LBT) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29 at the Pride Center in Wilton Manors.

Here is the news release:

Lesbian, bisexual, transgender females, and particularly those who are racial/ethnic minorities, face more barriers to health care and risks than other women. Federally funded research has shown that LBT women have a higher susceptibility to the following: breast, gynecological and lung cancers, cardio-vascular disease and diabetes. This event’s purpose is to offer health promotion screenings, information and resource referral services for this underserved and at risk population.

The need for this EXPO was demonstrated by attendance at the historic 9/24/11 inaugural event which exceeded participation projections by 100%! Offered at the EXPO will be the following free services: a) clinical breast exams, b) HIV testing, plus c) blood sugar and cholesterol assessment. Attendees will also learn ways to reduce their risks for: a) breast and other cancers, b) cardio-vascular disease and c) diabetes.

Organizations which will offer health promotion education and screenings include: Broward County Department of Health, Memorial Regional Hospital, Holy Cross Hospital, YWCA Family Wellness Program, Community Life Support, The Beautiful Gate, plus others. In addition, alternative and complementary medicine practitioners will be present.

A special feature of this year’s EXPO is “Ask a Nurse” sponsored by Care Resource. Dr. Maureen Greenwood, Nurse Practitioner, will be available to respond to attendees’ health care concerns. The EXPO will be hosted by Jill Tracey, HOT 105 FM radio personality.

This event is made possible by a generous grant from the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Miami Ft. Lauderdale affiliate. There is no cost to attend. In addition entertainment, food, raffles and give-aways will be offered.   For more information and details call 954-981-1090 or 305-467-2639.
