Report: $65 billion spent annually by gay European tourists

News release Oct. 25 from the Gay European Tourism Association:

mast2A report out today shows that gay Europeans spend up to $65 billion (€50 billion or £41 billion) each year on tourism, roughly the same as the USA although Europe’s population is nearly three times as large.  The study comes as the Gay European Tourism Association (GETA) launches Gay Welcome, its new website to help people find gay and gay-friendly hotels, events and destinations throughout Europe.

GETA’s report, Gay Tourism Matters, estimates for the first time the number of people who live open gay lifestyles in western, central and eastern Europe at nearly 26 million, or 2.6% of the total population.  This figure ranges from 5% in Western European countries down to just 0.25% in Turkey and the former Soviet states in Eastern Europe.

Drawing on existing research into the tourism spending of gay people from outside Europe, including the USA, Canada, Brazil, Japan and Australia, the report estimates that there is an additional market of $112 billion (€86 billion or £70 billion), much of which is spent in Europe. Community Marketing, the San Francisco based market research agency, reported in its 2011-2012 Annual Gay and Lesbian Tourism Report that London and Paris are the third and fourth favourite destinations for gay Americans, after New York and San Francisco.

Although 'out' gay people only represent 2.6% of the European population, the $62 billion spend represents 8% of the $823 billion (€632 billion) that the European Union estimates is spent on tourism in Europe each year.

“Gay people are a great market for the tourism industry” said Carlos Kytka, Executive Director of GETA. “Because we tend not to have children we have more disposable income and free time.  We have a higher propensity to travel, particularly in quieter periods outside school holidays.”

Many destinations and hotels are actively promoting themselves to the gay market.  European cities including London, Berlin, Stockholm and Cannes already market themselves as gay destinations understanding the value of gay spending power.

Christina Guggenberger of the Stockholm Visitors Board says that “Stockholm clearly understands the importance of targeting the gay market. Diversity, openness and respect are core values for any welcoming destination. Stockholm profits from being a popular destination for the LGBT travelers and it also supports our position as a world class destination.”

Increasing numbers of hotels are appealing to gay tourists.  GETA’s GayWelcome.com website lists over 3,500 hotels and guesthouses throughout Europe that welcome gay guests.  Travellers can rate their experience and recommend local attractions.  The site also provides guides to gay destinations and major event listings throughout Europe.

“You don’t have to paint your hotel pink to appeal to gay guests” said Carlos Kytka. “You just need to make us feel welcome.  Gay people who are questioned about sharing a double bed or excluded from honeymoon and valentine offers are not going to come back.”

GETA is rolling out programmes to help its members understand how to welcome and promote themselves to gay guests.  “As societies become more open to gay men and women, businesses cannot afford to ignore this important market segment” said Kytka. “We want to improve the travel experience in Europe for gay people and help gay-friendly companies to prosper and grow.”

The Gay Tourism Matters is available for free on www.geta-europe.org and the Gay Welcome website is www.gaywelcome.com.

Video | Preserve Marriage Washington's 'Not About Equality' TV ad

Here's the latest video from Preserve Marriage Washington, a group seeking to overturn Washington state's marriage equality law:

From the website:

Earlier this year, the legislature passed and the Governor signed SB 6239 to redefine marriage for all Washingtonians, stripping the roles of men and women from marriage and making it a genderless institution. Preserve Marriage Washington, a coalition of pastors, community and faith groups, and citizens, has qualified a referendum to allow voters to decide if they want this legislation to take effect. On November 6, Washingtonians have the opportunity to “Reject” R-74 in order to preserve marriage as the union between one man and one woman. If R-74 had not qualified for the ballot, SB 6239 would have taken effect on June 7, 2012, redefining marriage for the state of Washington.

'How To Survive a Plague' about the AIDS epidemic through Nov. 1 at O Cinema; Q&A Sunday night

From O Cinema:

Faced with their own mortality, an impassioned group of young people broke the mold as radical warriors taking on Washington and the medical establishment.

HTSAP_poster-452x670-260x385How To Survive a Plague is the story of the brave young men and women who successfully reversed the tide of an epidemic, demanded the attention of a fearful nation, and stopped AIDS from becoming a death sentence. This improbable group of activists bucked oppression and, with no scientific training, infiltrated government agencies and the pharmaceutical industry, helping to identify promising new medication and treatments and move them through trials and into drugstores in record time. In the process, they saved their own lives and ended the darkest days of a veritable plague, while virtually emptying AIDS wards in American hospitals in the process.

The powerful story of their fight is a classic tale of empowerment and activism that has since inspired movements for change in everything from breast cancer research to Occupy Wall Street. Their story stands as a powerful inspiration to future generations, a road map, and a call to arms. This is how you change the world.

Dr. Bill Darrow will join us for the 7pm screening on Sunday, Oct 28th for a brief Q&A afterwards.

Dr. Bill Darrow’s was the first sociologist to track the origin of the virus to patient zero during his tenure at the CDC. His role in the discovery of the AIDS virus, HIV, was described by Randy Shilts’ 1987 book And the Band Played On, He was also portrayed in the film adaption of the book as well as appearing in the documentary, Zero Factor.

How To Survive a Plague runs through Nov. 1 at O Cinema. Click here to purchase tickets.

Cheryl Ladd: A [Charlie's] Angel with religion

BY STEVE ROTHAUS, srothaus@MiamiHerald.com

Looking back at TV’s original, iconic Charlie’s Angels, actress Cheryl Ladd says “they called it jiggle but it was so tame.”

“You never saw us sleep with anyone,” says Ladd, who joined the 1976-81 ABC-TV series in its second season, after co-star Farrah Fawcett jumped ship. “We had morals. As [fellow Angel Jaclyn Smith] always says, ‘We were nuns, but we had great hair!’’’

Now 61 but still blonde and well-coiffed, Ladd says she’s ecstatic the complete series, also starring Kate Jackson (and later Shelley Hack and Tanya Roberts), is available on DVD (Sony, $66).

“It was a show the entire family could watch, yet it was exciting, powerful women who had each other’s backs,” Ladd says. “There were so many great messages: We were not trying to be men. We wore great clothes, had great makeup. There was something powerful in that.”

Before she married actor-producer David Ladd (son of movie star Alan Ladd), Cheryl Stoppelmoor of South Dakota already was making a name for herself. She provided vocals for the Saturday morning cartoon classic, Josie and the Pussycats, and later appeared in ‘70s TV staples including The Partridge Family, Happy Days and Police Woman.

Ladd’s big break came when Fawcett unexpectedly quit producer Aaron Spelling’s Charlie’s Angels, a smash series about three beautiful women who work for a private investigations agency run by the unseen Charlie (voiced by John Forsythe, just before Dynasty).

“When Aaron asked me to do it, I turned it down twice,” says Ladd, who didn’t want to carry the burden of being Fawcett’s replacement. “This is not like taking a part, it’s like making me a huge target.”

Spelling came up with the idea of making Ladd’s character (Kris) the little sister of Fawcett’s (Jill). “She wasn’t trying to be Farrah. She could be family, the other girls could love her,” Ladd says. “She could just join the happy band. It was still enormous pressure.”

The pressure quickly lifted, Ladd says: “The ratings went up in the second season – woo hoo!”

In 1979, Ladd, then the mother of a 4-year-old girl, told the network she wanted to star in a TV movie about child abuse, When She Was Bad.

“You should have seen the looks on the faces of the powers-that-be at ABC,” Ladd says. “I understand, it’s a difficult subject and I’m not running around in a bikini.” Still, she got the part and since then has been an ambassador for Childhelp, an abuse support group.

The Ladds divorced in 1980 and the following year she married Brian Russell, who executive produced her 1983 TV bio, Grace Kelly. The film was in development when Princess Grace of Monaco died after a car wreck. Both Grace and her husband, Prince Rainier, had already approved of the movie, Ladd says.

Despite the highs and lows of early success, Ladd says she’s been able to stay grounded “no matter how far off the track you might be wandering.”
“I’m a Christian,” say reveals. “However I lose track of Him, He never loses track of me.”

Ladd says she isn’t born again. “I don’t understand that term. I chose it for myself and continue to choose it for myself.”

Also, Ladd dislikes being stereotyped for being a Christian. “I don’t judge people, that’s not my job. That’s not what I’m on the planet to do. I have a hard enough time keeping myself in order,” she says. “We all assume and you know what that means. It’s so easy to label someone. All that does is tear us apart from each other and we need to love each other.”

After a few more minutes talking religion, Ladd stops herself and laughs. “I didn’t think I was going to become a philosopher. We were here to talk about Charlie’s Angels. Let’s go back to jiggle!”

Tacoma man chronicles year pretending to be gay in the Bible Belt

BY CRAIG SAILOR, THE (TACOMA) NEWS TRIBUNE

When ultra-conservative Christian Timothy Kurek came out as a gay man to his friends and family, the reaction was swift: confusion and silence.

What they didn't know was that Kurek wasn't really gay. He was beginning a yearlong experiment to see what life was like as a gay man in the Bible Belt.

Now living in Tacoma, Kurek, 26, has just released a book detailing the experience.

“The Cross in the Closet” came out Oct. 11 and has caused a media storm. He’s appeared on Barbara Walters’ “The View,” CNN, MSNBC, ABC, the BBC and dozens of other media outlets around the nation and the world.

Obama backs gay marriage measures in 3 states

BY DAVID CRARY, AP NATIONAL WRITER

President Barack Obama on Thursday threw his support behind ballot measures in Maine, Maryland and Washington state that would legalize same-sex marriage.

Though the president first voiced his general approval for gay marriage in May, he had not previously offered specific endorsements of the three measures.

In each case, the endorsements were issued through the state branches of Obama's re-election campaign.

"While the president does not weigh in on every single ballot measure in every state, the president believes in treating everyone fairly and equally, with dignity and respect," said Paul Bell, the campaign's press secretary in Washington state.
