Freedom to Marry is featuring two Miami-area couples in its latest campaign, 14 Photos: Our First Valentine’s Day as a Married Couple.
- Good Morning America weather anchor Sam Champion and Miami artist Rubem Robierb, who married Dec. 21 in New York. "We don't really have a ‘Valentine's Day thing,'" Rubem told Freedom to Marry. "We usually just say that we live in a Valentine's Day mood."
- Coral Gables newlyweds Daniel Zavala and Yohandel Ruiz, who along with thousands of other gay and lesbian binational couples, face separation because of the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act, which prohibits the federal government from recognizing legally married same-sex spouses. "We're fighting to be able to celebrate this Valentine's Day - and every Valentine's Day - together and not to be forced apart," Ruiz told Freedom to Marry.
