'Yossi,' the sequel to Israeli gay film classic 'Yossi & Jagger,' opens Friday at Coral Gables Art Cinema

Yossi, a sequel set one decade after the conclusion of the Israeli gay film classic Yossi & Jagger, opens Friday at Coral Gables Art Cinema and Living Room Theaters in Boca Raton.

Here's the news release from Coral Gables Art Cinema director Robert Rosenberg, who founded the Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival:

The tender and emotionally gripping Israeli film Yossi, which screened to critical praise at the Tribeca Film Festival, will begin its Exclusive Miami Premiere run on Friday, February 15 at the Coral Gables Art Cinema in beautiful 2K Digital Cinema Projection. Returning to his award-winning role from director Eytan Fox's groundbreaking Yossi & Jagger, esteemed actor Ohad Knoller gives another stellar performance as Yossi, a closeted gay man now living a solitary existence in Tel Aviv. Nostalgia, romance, and a breaking down of emotional barriers heat up the mix in this wise film that speaks to all audiences.

yossiBrilliantly and compassionately, Fox draws the viewer into a delicate world of grief and redemption, all the while illuminating the changing social and political landscape for the Israeli gay community. After a chance encounter at work with a woman from his past, the overworked surgeon Yossi decides he finally needs some time away. On a road trip to a resort weekend in Eilat, he befriends a group of young active-duty soldiers who display a contemporary acceptance of homosexuality. The personal and the political come together as one man learns to believe in the possibility of new love, and Israel's by now long-time policy of integrating gays and lesbians into their army has a very practical impact. Filmed in cosmopolitan Tel Aviv and the beautiful countryside, Yossi is both a quintessentially Israeli film, with wonderful Hebrew music by the iconic Keren Ann, and a universal one. NPR says, "Funny, exuberant and shamelessly seductive, Yossi is an unabashedly populist entertainment with a spirit conciliatory enough to melt the heart of any naysayer."
Gables Cinema Director Robert Rosenberg says, "We are excited to bring a new film to South Florida from one of Israel's leading filmmakers, Eytan Fox, and one that touches on such deeply human and contemporary issues." Tickets for all screenings are $11.50 and under and are available for purchase in advance  on the Cinema's website at www.gablescinema.com or in person at the box office during regular screening hours.
