From Nan Van Den Bergh, president of ARROW:
Lesbian women have higher risks factors for breast cancer than other women. This is based on a combination of factors including: a) less likely to have born children, b) higher body mass index, c) greater use of alcohol among those who drink and d) less likely to have received prevention screening. Less screening is a function of a) not having health insurance, b) not having a primary care provider and c) prior negative experiences with health care based on sexual orientation or gender presentation.
National health promotion guidelines suggest that all women should acquire breast self awareness knowledge and skills starting within their 20’s. Also starting within their 20’s, women should have a yearly clinical breast exam by a health care provider. It is recommended that a baseline mammogram be established at age 40, and every other year until age 50. At that time, in consultation with one’s health care provider, a mammogram every year is recommended.
Because of the risks lesbian women face in accessing preventive health services, a mammovan at the PRIDE Center will offer free mammograms for those women meeting the following eligibility criteria:
* ages 50-64
* income no greater than $24,000 for a single person
Women who do not meet those eligibility criteria can still acquire a mammogram, and will not require a prescription. The cost of that will be $150.00.
PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. Phone the following number for scheduling: 954-467-4700 x 4042
