From Robin Schwartz, executive director of Aqua Foundation for Women:
Nicole Waters is AFW's Chair, effective June, 2013. She succeeds past Chair Jen Krizwho fulfilled her term. Jen's involvement for many years in both AFW and Aqua Girl is greatly appreciated. Nicole Waters takes the helm after years of serving on the board, first as Secretary and then as Vice Chair.
"I am excited and enthusiastic about the opportunity to lead Aqua Foundation for Women. Growing our programs to continue to expand our impact on the South Florida community is my goal," said Nicole.
Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, Nicole has lived and worked in South Florida since 1997. A graduate of Kennedy-Western University, she is the Business Development Manager for Mercedes-Benz of Coral Gables. Nicole plays an active role in both the straight and LGBTQ communities, including Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami-Dade, Miami-Dade Women's Chamber of Commerce, CHARLEE (Children Have All Rights: Legal, Educational and Emotional) and NCLR (National Center for Lesbian Rights).
Waters says, "I'm proud to welcome our newest Board members to our already dynamic, professional, and thoughtful Board of Directors. I'm confident their input and leadership will lead us to great results."
Tori Bertran is a South Florida native who has volunteered for several community service organizations, including Hands on Miami, Pridelines Youth Services, SunServe and the Aqua Foundation for Women. Tori is energized by working with LGBTQ youth, watching them grow and develop qualities that will help them become leaders. An IT professional, Tori is looking forward to helping LBT women in South Florida in any way she can.
Hailing from Orleans, France where she was born and raised, Cecile Houry moved to Miami in 2000 to study sport and gender history, with a focus on American women and the modern summer Olympic Games. She earned a doctorate from the University of Miami. Currently, Cecile works at FIU's Robert Stempel College of Public Health and Social Work and is on the board of directors of the Miami Council for International Visitors.
Professionally, Sara Campbell works for an online brokerage firm as a technical support supervisor. She has been part of Aqua Foundation for Women for more than ten years as a Steering Committee member and a volunteer. Campbell enjoys donating her time to several nonprofit organizations and service groups, including Care Resource, the Humane Society, Drag It Out, and SisterSpeak. She is excited to help Aqua Foundation for Women increase its presence in Broward County.
Miami native Alesha Smith is currently the Manager of membership sales at the Biltmore Resort in Coral Gables. After completing the acting program at Southern Methodist University, Alesha performed around the U.S. for many years, but returned to Miami to be closer to family. Alesha spends her time volunteering her services as a chef and mentor to the youth of Empowered Youth Miami. Alesha is active in the LGBT community and looks forward to helping build support for the Aqua Foundation.
For the last 2 years, Elsa Roberts has been AFW's Office Manager and Program Director. We thank her for her time and dedication and wish her well as she leaves town to pursue a graduate degree.
Taking over as Program Director will be Katherine Campbell. Katharine holds a Doctorate degree in public affairs and is a licensed clinical social worker with more than 15 years of experience in social services, including lesbian/gay/transgender/intersex issues. Her work experience includes nonprofit leadership, private counseling, social work, and business consulting.
Returning to the organization she helped found, Vivian Lamadrid joins AFW staff as the Office Administrator. Born in Cuba, Vivian was raised in Miami and has been a paramedic, a tour operator, a cruise specialist, spent five years on the staff of Olivia Women's Travel and she works with a local gay travel company Source Events on their annual Miami Beach Gay Pride Cruise.
Aqua Foundation has also hired LMG Events to manage AFW's events throughout the year. LMG has produced events both nationally and internationally. With over 15 years of experience in production, we are fortunate to have them at AFW.
