MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Alabama Republican leaders are meeting in Montgomery, where a major topic will be remarks by a college Republican leader in support of gay marriage.
Some members of the State Republican Executive Committee were upset when the president of the College Republican Federation of Alabama, Stephanie Petelos, supported the Supreme Court decision overturning the Defense of Marriage Act in June.
Petelos' position gives her an automatic seat on the state party's steering committee, and some members say she shouldn't have used her official position to make her remarks because traditional marriage is a cornerstone of the Republican platform.
They have proposed bylaws changes for consideration Saturday that could remove Petelos from the party's steering committee.
Groups representing young Republicans and African-American Republicans have come to her defense.
