Miami's Hispanic LGBT-rights Unity Coalition names David Kessler as educational programs director

News release from Unity Coalition:

August 2013…Miami, Florida- Unity Coalition|Coalición Unida (UC|CU), the first & only organization for the Latino|Hispanic|LGBTQ Community (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning) - advancing Equality since 2002, is proud to announce the appointment of UC|CU board member David S. Kessler as the organization’s Director of Educational Programs. Mr. Kessler, LCSW, DAPA is a Licensed Psychotherapist and Life Coach, and a Diplomat of the American Psychotherapy Association. He has been working with individuals, couples and groups in our community for over 20 years.

In his role as Director of Educational Programs, he will continue the programming of UC|CU, focusing on such issues as Bullying & Hate Crimes, Immigration & Bi-national Couples, LGBT Family Planning, and many other topics of importance to the South Florida Community. Recently, Mr. Kessler led the way to securing the UC|CU’s Certification for Continuing Education Credit by the Florida Board of Clinical Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy and Mental Health Counseling. This will allow UC|CU to offer Continuing Education credits for trainings & workshops to a variety of professions in the near future.

“I plan to continue the great work of UC|CU in Community Education, Awareness and Training, by developing programs and events accessible to the entire South Florida community. Only through this type of work can we further develop a sense of understanding, respect and evolution within our community”, said Kessler.

Within the last year UC|CU embarked on an aggressive educational & community building program.

Starting with the International Love & the Law Conference last October (during the Celebrate ORGULLO Festival) UC|CU featured Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz as the keynote speaker and a panel of experts, addressing the issues and questions of a packed room. This was followed by a 2nd Conference in April (during Miami Beach PRIDE), with a stellar panel of experts, discussing same-sex couples & the law. In July UC|CU welcomed Cuban LGBT activist Ignacio Cepero and his wife, transgender advocate Wendy Iriepa to Miami with a series of Community Forums to encourage dialogue and awareness of the LGBT community’s issues on the island.

Most recently UC|CU hosted a series of workshops in Dade & Broward counties: Immigration Basics for Same-Sex Couples – bringing together our community’s leading legal & social experts on DOMA, Immigration and bi-national couples. The response was tremendous, and plans are in the works for follow-up events in the coming months, including a workshop focusing on LGBT Families – “Planning For Your Future”, a conference which will coincide with our Celebrate Orgullo Festival in October.

Under the guidance of David S. Kessler, and the direction of the Unity Coalition|Coalicion Unida board of directors, the future of LGBT & Hispanic|Latino rights and issues in South Florida looks bright, secure and informed.
