Transgender Day of Remembrance to be observed 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22, at Barry University gallery

The National Transgender Day of Remembrance may be Nov. 20, but in Miami the occasion will be observed on Friday, Nov. 22.

To overcome logistics issues, the local planning committee decided to hold the event on Friday, said Carla Silva, executive director of The Alliance for GLBTQ Youth.

Additionally, we’ve added different elements which departs from the traditional TDoR (memorializing transgender people that have been murdered) which include trans* community members speaking on the following issues to educate the community-at-large," Silva says.

1) Highlighting the current status of issues/ programs in our community

2) Reflecting on the importance & need for TDoR

3) Envisioning a better future where trans* people are safe & valued within all our communities

"We will also read names of transgender people that were murdered in the US and there will be a ritual to honor all the people that have been lost."

The Friday event runs from 6 to 8 p.m. at Barry University Gato Gallery, 11300 NE Second Ave., Miami Shores.
