Video and photos | World AIDS Day 2013 at Florida International University in North Miami

At right, Edwin Serrano, 22, a graduate assistant for LGBTQA Initiatives at Florida International University, speaks with sophomores Willy Silva, center, and Joel Batista, both 19, on Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2013, at FIU’s World AIDS Day 2013 resource fair at the Biscayne Bay Campus.

Below, Glen Weinzimer of Hollywood, founder of the SMART Ride HIV/AIDS awareness organization, speaks in front of a panel from the AIDS Memorial Quilt to students at the resource fair. ‘It’s important to reach out to college-age students because they for the most part have not lived through the worst of the pandemic,’ says Weinzimer, a longtime AIDS survivor.

‘Many do not understand that [AIDS] is still a deadly disease and they didn’t see the worst of it in the early ‘80s and the early ‘90s, when people were becoming a mere essence of their original self. People who were 200 pounds suddenly died weighing 135 pounds. It was an awful death to endure and we lost so many millions of people around the world to the disease.’
