A last-minute switch has been announced by the 2014 Winter Party Festival committee: The Miami Beach host hotel will be the National on Collins Avenue, not the Shelborne Wyndham Grand South Beach as originally planned.
The Shelborne is under renovation and won't be ready in time for the Winter Party in early March, according to Michael Bath, events director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force.
All guests who had reservations at the Shelborne have already been transferred to the National, at the same rates, Bath said.
Here's a news release from the Task Force:
MIAMI BEACH, FL – February 5, 2014 – The National Hotel Miami Beach has been selected as the new host hotel for the 2014 Winter Party Festival, announced Michael Bath, events director for the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, which produces the six-day fundraising event. The move to a new host hotel became necessary when the original host hotel, Shelborne Wyndham Grand South Beach, informed the Task Force staff that renovations to the property would not be completed in time for the event.
Guests who had previously booked rooms at the Shelborne have had their reservations transferred to the new host hotel, which will honor their original room rates. As a result of these transfers, the National Hotel is now completely sold out for Winter Party Festival, but additional rooms are available for Winter Party Festival guests at Gale South Beach and Regent Hotel, The Shore Club and Hotel Gaythering.
The location of the popular Under One Sun Pool party has also been moved to National Hotel Miami Beach, Bath said.
“Regrettably, the extensive renovation we are completing to restore The Shelborne to its original grandeur has encountered some delays that will now prohibit us from serving as the host hotel for the 21st Winter Party Festival,” said Shelborne General Manager Sean McKeen. “We look forward to welcoming Festival guests to The Shelborne in the very near future.”
“The staff and management of National Hotel are eager to roll out the red carpet for our Winter Party Festival guests,” said Yaser Mohamad, Hotel Manager. “We appreciate being named the new host hotel for the event and look forward to providing a true five-star experience for all our guests.”
The nostalgia of 1930s and 1940s Miami Beach is clearly apparent at National Hotel, located in the city’s Art Deco neighborhood. The oceanfront hotel boasts 152 rooms and suites as well as a 205-foot long pool — one of two pools at National Hotel — skirted by palm trees and facing the Atlantic Ocean.
Originally opened in 1939, the National Hotel offers onsite dining, from French Countryside cuisine at Tamara Bistro to poolside cocktails at Aqua Bar & Grill. The property also features spa treatments from a tropical-inspired spa cabana.
In addition to serving as the host hotel and Under One Sun Pool Party venue, National Hotel will provide the location for the Welcome Center and the on-site management and production offices for Winter Party Festival staff and volunteers.
From the world renowned Beach Party to a shopping night along famed Lincoln Road Mall, to enticing events for women, the 21st edition of Winter Party Festival will feature nearly two dozen of the most amazing experiences on the planet. Proceeds from Winter Party Festival and the Miami Recognition Dinner support the important work of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force to build power, take action and create positive, lasting change for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and their families throughout the country. A significant portion of the proceeds also funds multiple organizations serving the LGBT community in South Florida through a grant made by the Task Force to the GLBT Community Projects Fund of The Miami Foundation.
