From Equality Florida:
EQUALITY FLORIDA: GOP’s VAN ZANT’S HOMOPHOBIC SCARE TACTICS ARE REPREHENSIBLE
Speaking at the Operation Education Conference in Orlando, Florida, State Rep. Charles Van Zant (R-Palatka) made some outrageous statements while railing against Common Core, making the absurd claim the curriculum is designed to "turn children gay."
In a video that recently surfaced from the March 2014 conference, Van Zant urged his constituents to oppose being made to implement the new educational standard known as Common Core.
“They are promoting as hard as they can, any youth that is interested in the LGBT agenda...
“These people….will promote double mindedness in state education and attract every one of your children to become as homosexual as they possibly can.”
Equality Florida condemned Van Zant's outrageous claims.
“Representative Van Zant has a long record of extremism, so while his latest rant is shocking, it is not at all surprising," said Nadine Smith, CEO of Equality Florida Institute. “It is reprehensible whenever an elected official conjures up homophobic scare tactics for political gain. His assertion that an educational program seeks to ‘make children gay' is simply absurd. I hope others in Florida government will swiftly distance themselves from such a paranoid and unhinged view."
SAVE statement on anti-LGBT comments by State Rep. Van Zant regarding new standardized testing program in Florida schools:
Florida State Representative Charles Van Zant's comments characterizing new standardized testing in public schools as a scheme to "attract...children to become as homosexual as they possibly can" are ignorant at best and hateful at worst. Such an important policy like the plan to update Florida's standardized testing program should be debated on its merits -- and using the LGBT community to distract from the real issues will certainly fail. While SAVE does not plan to take a position on the policy in question, we will hold Rep. Van Zant accountable for his anti-equality stance and his blatant targeting of the LGBT community.
