Will Northwestern football really be suspended?

Miami-Dade School superintendent Rudy Crew is reportedly considering suspending NW's football team for next season.

Do you think Crew's decision if he goes through with it, is correct? Is it too excessive penalizing this year's team, or is ANY punishment too late at this point, seven months after the scandal involving former RB Antwain Easterling came to light?

No absolutely not... Thats the worse choice he could ever make. Why punish the "kids" by taking away their season for something they didnt do in the first place? Putting some of their college scholarships in jeopardy because of the decisions that were made by adults? Don't punish the kids for something that was handled by adults.

Black Teacher

Whatever Dr. Crew does I will support him. As a black educator and football coach, I am glad this has happen. People are right it happens in every school, but the buck had to stop somewhere. Look at what the"alumnus" are crying about. FOOTBALL, not the fact the school is a F or had six principles in like six years. This situation has Blacks in Miami looking one minded. As far as football scholarships, camps are where most players are offender a scholarship. I am sure the players will be able to transfer to other schools. Shoot, half their players are not even in Northwestern's school zone. Let's be truthful about the situation. Also if you started as a Bull its likely you will start at any school in Dade! As a friend of a coach on their football staff, I can say the whole staff and team knew what happen before Eastlering was arrested. If not the season suspended, the whole coaching staff should be ban from coaching in Dade or fired.

I believe that Dr. Crew should allow them to play the schedule this year but not allow them to play in the playoffs. I think that would teach the next coach or principals that come around to not show favoritism to athletes and that winning isn’. I’m kind of glad that this has happened because for years this school has been stealing athletes from other schools and they haven’t honor any coaching passes at their gates. Maybe this will take them off the high horse in Dade. GO Bulls

I guess suspending the mnw footballl team would make many schools happy because thier schools finally have a chance at winning but is it really fair. You cant suspend the students of the football team because of the mistakes of the administrators, coaches, directors, whatever. They dont make decisions on who play and who doesnt. They had nothing to do with what happened so why suspend thier season. Crew should take the appropriate actions toward the people who never reported the crime but as far as the suspension of the season. i think its excessive and unfair to the students. you would be putting a lot of thier scholorships in jeapordy, this is how they plan on going to college. you cant take that away from them. As far as the students transferring, doubt it. They got too much pride in MNW to play for another school.

Black Teacher are you insane.... Im not happy this is happening first off the person that had done this thing isnt even on the team anymore,Coaches and Staff in school knew but they wouldnt of told the players that at all. Some of these boys if northwestern gets suspended they will have to transfer some will lose there scholarships right off the bat, like Harris who will have to learn a whole new system. You just dont take that away from those boys.Sure the school is an F school but dont blame the students its mainly the Teachers look at Edison for example F school 6yrs straight with piss poor teachers. The Alums are crying about football because thats what the school is known for Now if this was a Weston Cypress Bay its a diffrent story. This happens at every school across the nation it just got all out there for 3 reasons 1)State Champ football team,2)All-Star Running Back,3)because the girl got caught in the act and is scared for her life pretty much when shes in liberty city.Black people always want to see other black people down and that my friend is what your asking for these 50 boys to transfer lose and opportunity to give the school another title to bring that city some light is outrageous.

It's hard to say whether its right or wrong. But truely it is too late! Antwain has already received his fame, position on a college team, and moved on. The remaining boys on the team are the VICTIMS. Being that I saw the team in practice on several occassions--I know for a fact that not all of them are "recruited" material. Some of them will only get attention because of the fact that they play for NORTHWESTERN. And many of them are less than scholar athletes. Regardless of the situation, their dedication to that athletic program for 4 yrs. should be honored. And they deserve the right to play in blue & gold this year.

M James

As an alumnus of MNHS,I am disappointed in all that has happened. MNHS has been an entity in this community for 50 years. It has educated and empowered many. Many Black owned business are a product of the vocational programs once offered. But that too was taken when others saw how productive it was, remember when Lindsey Hopkins opened, yea NHS was successful so they had to offer it to others. Then they pulled most programs from this community. The principals have not stayed, because of the problems they meet when they get to the school. Where's the help the staff needs? Students with problems can't be suspended because that impact your NCLB and achieving mastery on a test. Beginnning in 1956 books were old, furniture was too, but teachers cared and made a difference.
I agree that something has to be done. You've already moved the principal, now let's move the coaching staff. As with the FCAT test you have to sign that you will not look at or help with a test. Devise something that would hold coaches accountable.
NHS has won championships before, will be champions again and alumnus will contine to send their children and grandchildren to a school that we pride. Most may not live in the area but the school has so much pride it attracts many. No one talks about the medical magnet that attracts others that don't look like the make-up of the community, but because we (African Americans) choose to attend, it is said that we only want to win.

Please remember schools aren't "F's" - students choose not to learn or are not motivated to learn and no one looks at why or how to move them to the next level.

Check this year's 10th grade FCAT scores and let's move forward. Don't punish all for the mistakes of a few. Adults in the school have to be accountable for their actions.

Concerned parent

I am really concerned about the overall welfare of the school and have been for some time now. This stuff didn't start in Sept/Oct, it's been going on for many, many years. I know for a fact because I have had two sons to graduate from MNW and I have one that is a senior now and I don't think it's fair to have my son suffer because of the selfish and irresponsible acts of GROWN folk. We are to be nurturer's for our children and look out for their well being. I agree that Dr. Crew should bring the hammer down on every staff member and administrative person that helped or encouraged Dr. Bernard to make the decision that he made to cover-up the wrong doing of one student. It is not fair to throw away the whole bowl because of one bad apple. Not many parents will be able to send their son/daughter to school without the aid of scholarship, and their scholarship possibilities will be limited without participating during this ensuing year.

dagame29,

get your facts straight. Edison was an "F" school for FIVE years (not 6), not because of teachers, but because of outside factors. This year? We were 8 points short of a "C" with much of the same faculty. Where's Northwestern? oh that's right, now THEY are the f.

and yes the program should be suspended for the year. they have far too many players that are not in their zone (hell I know nearly all of them), this was a well-known scandal at the school and it went too far. Suspend the program, allow the boys to transfer if they can...if they can't then they just learned a valuable lesson..."stop snitchin" is stupid.

It amazes me how we (African Americans) can be so quick to judge each other when 1. we don't know all of the facts & 2. we are ready to start a riot when someone outside our race does the same thing. Talk about contradiction, this tops the cake. It is unfortunate that the 2 children who are at the top of everyone's attention, made the wrong choice when they engaged in their consensual activity, but instead of pointing the finger, punishing innocent children and trying to demoralize a school for the sake of self satisfaction, let's take a look at all the contributing factors that allowed a crime (since that's what everyone is calling it) this to happen. Here in Florida we have a rule/law that says, "If my child does not turn 5 on or before September 1st", then he/she has to wait another year because of their b-day. 2. If my 8 year old third grader fails the "Good Ole F-CAT", then he/she has to repeat the 3rd grade. Both of these "RULES", which were made by "ADULTS" can result in a 18 year old attending school with kids under their age. Do we punish them for those decisions too? To hear someone who calls themself "Black Teacher" make the comments he made, it leaves me to ask, "Who are you teaching"? (not my children I hope). Hearing some of you say that this school cheats and steals athletes from other schools only sounds like the cries of a sore loser or a hater of that Blue & Gold. B4 you make false accusations, take a step back and look at the enrollment of the school in which you attend, attended & support. If it is without sin, then you my friend have a right to judge. If not, then don't be a hyprocrite. Does having MNW not have a football team open the chances of your team having a successful season? More importantly, did the 50 plus young men on this team have any involvement with this situation? Everyone's focus remains on Antwain Easterling, but I want to ask, "Is anyone concerned about the punishment for the 24 & 30 year old men that were involved with this young lady as well? Not! Sounds like the only thing everyone is focused on is bringing MNW down. Again, it is unfortunate that 2 high school children made the wrong choice, but their choice was not the choice of the 50 plus young men who represented this school for 15 plus weeks. Not to mention, some of them are also academic scholars. In other words, "LEAVE THOSE CHILDREN ALONE". Let's focus on the improvement(s) for now and the future and let the past be an aid for better laws.

greg

Put Central, Jackson, Booker T in the same situation. I wouldnt be writing this right now because they would have that player locked up and everyone that was involved with it. They would also have the team suspended with no question. Tell MNW powerful alumni why they dont argue the fact that the school has been a F for the past few years. They would rather argue about a football team season. Now you determine where theyre priorities are. MNW gets special treatment and thats the whole point. Should they suspend the team? I cant say, but take in consideration some of the points I mentioned. Mind you that this involved a 14 year old female, and that there were no disiplinary actions taken on anybody. Everyone got off easy. Now would that happen if it was Central, Jackson, Booker T in the same situation? Think about that.

Not smart!!!

This is all dumb. The only reason Crew is considering suspending the team is because his neck is on the line as well. Nobody who posted must not be keeping up with the story. Suspending the team will only hurt the kids. The principal and athletic direcors careers are over. Easterling couldn't go to a top ten school. You want to hurt all the Seniors and underclassmen as well. This is just a reflection of how dumb the people downtown are.

james

I live in the upper part of south carolina, and have followed this story for a while now. There is no reason to take away these kids livlyhood because of mistakes by one kid and his coaches. They are the victims in this.If i was a parent,i would see mr crew in court along with the rest of the florida high school league.I am all for the firing of a principal and the coaches. They should have known better. Also, football season has been over for months, why bring this up know.Mr crews just wants to look like a bad a$$ in front of his peers.Get a clue mr crews.

Rudy Rodriguez-Chomat

It would be absolutely wrong to suspend the football season for Northwestern High School.

I stated when Easterling was arrested that he should not play in the state championship game. It should have been an automatic suspension, nothing to think about. Not even in the NFL do you play the week after getting arrested. It just doesn't happen.

The Principal was wrong and he's paid for it. He might serve prison time for it. The AD was wrong and he's paid for it. He resigned. Roland Smith was wrong and from what I heard he resigned today or is about to resign (still a rumor, but a reliable source told me this), so he's paid for it if that's true.

But the players on the team are kids. They don't make the decisions. They play football. They are not the people that make the decisions for what the Northwestern football heirarchy does. They should not be punished for the mistakes of adults in charge.

The fact that Northwestern is an "F" school for six years in a row is irrelevant and the fact the school goes through Principals like people drink water is also irrelevant.

This is about the kids on that team and the school they goto. How many kids WANT to transfer out of their school going into their Senior year. I know I didn't. I don't know many people that do WANT to.

Fact is, Easterling made a mistake, a mistake that everyone knew about long before he was arrested, but a mistake that's not uncommon ANYWHERE in high school. I am sure you could find a ton of 18 year old seniors sleeping with 14-15 year old freshman. But they don't end up arrested for it. Doesn't make it right, but makes it understand. But even he paid for it. I can assure you that Southern Miss wasn't his college of choice, but almost a college he had to choose when other schools backed off him because of his legal problems.

Rudy Crew has done a lot of things in Miami-Dade County that have been good, but this one would be REALLY bad.

Football is the one thing UNFORTUNATELY that brings pride to Liberty City in an area where there is not a whole lot to look forward to. It's a shame that is the reality, but it remains the reality.

And this year's team isn't just great, but it might be one of the greatest teams ever assembled in the state of Florida and the nation for that matter.

Last year's team was untouchable. This one is better.

This team is scheduled to play a regular season game in Texas this year against what will be the No. 1 or No. 2 team in the country. Northwestern will be either No. 1 or No. 2.

It's a match up of goliaths, a match up that many people dream about. The reality is this team could very well end up being the mythical National Champion when all is said and done. The kids don't deserve the punishment for what so-called responsible adults were supposed to have handled.

Sure, they could all transfer and start at any school they want, but at the same time, they would then be transferring for purposes of athletics. That is against FSHAA rules. So now the FHSAA would have to change rules to allow the transfer of some 85-100 student-athletes, further damaging other sports like basketball and track because there are those that play football, basketball and track. And changing a rule or giving a pass on that rule for Northwestern means that the rule would be challenged by every kid who ever transfers on the basis of athletics again. It opens up a Pandora's box that the FHSAA does not want to visit.

There are many ways to remedy a problem like this, but the easiest one is this: FIRE EVERYONE IN CHARGE. REPLACE THEM ALL AND BRING IN NEW BLOOD. I MEAN EVERYONE. That includes every single coach on the football staff. You hate to have to do it that way, but everyone knew what happened and no one stepped up and acted like an adult is supposed to.

But the kids shouldn't pay for it with what could be a dream season. That's my two cents.

DJ SlickMoney

Rudy Rodriguez-Chomat is absolutely correct. You can't punish those kids for the mistakes of adults. It's just not ethical.

Everyone is looking at how Northwestern has performed academically in its past and how many principals have gone through the school. Mistakes were made, and people have paid for those mistakes.

If Crew suspends Northwestern's football program, what is that supposed to prove? And what is that going to help solve? Is that supposed to make the school's FCAT grade elevate, because that's what everyone who knows nothing about Northwestern seems to be so focused on. By suspending the season, is that supposed to fix all the issues of why Northwestern can't keep a principal longer than a year? They're both totally irrlevant!

The point is, if Crew decides to suspend Northwestern's football season, the only thing that decision is going to do is create more problems within the school and community, and prove absolutely nothing. And I'm sure we all can agree that the last thing Northwestern needs is MORE problems.

Come on people! Wake up, smell the coffee, and think about things in the long run. In order to make a school a better place, if that's what we're REALLY trying to do, how is it that you believe this decision is going to help in that process?

Patrick

Wow, this is a tough one. Too many believe that football is all there is and yet, to far too many, football is all there is. There should be a lesson taught, but what is the best and fair way to teach it? The ignorant in our community could care less about those young boys education. All they want is that brown pigskin, big hits, touchdowns and the ability to stick up their index finger and scream “WERE #1!” Others envy Northwestern’s strength, traditions and community followings and just want to see the school take a hit. Then there are those of us that think that far too much emphasis is placed on sports, especially in the black community and would like to see more kids focus on school work and learning. Back to the issue at hand…I think that all coaches that knew should be fired, strip MNW of last year’s title but allow the kids to have their season.

Concerned Sports Fan

This was even worse than the Chris Rainey decision. The adults should all be fired - including the school principal and the head football coach.

And, the entire football program should be shut down. Why? Because the same "football community" would not be so apt in the future to stand by while the administrators allow someone accused of rape to play in the state championship game.

Do the kids suffer? Yes. But, kids suffer when parents go to jail too. Are we going to stop sending criminals to jail because they have kids? Kids suffering is no reason to avoid punishing an institution.

Here's a great quote by the "leader" of the Northwestern alumni assocation:

"We won't allow our young people to be hurt by a situation that goes on probably at every high school."

Sure Larry - every high school allows football players to rape underage students in the school bathroom and then play in the state championship game. And, even if that were the case, I don't think the "everybody else is doing it" defense has a lot of merit.

The article is pretty clear that the law required Easterling to be suspended for a minimum of 10 days. The kid should have been in jail. But, at an absolute minimum, he should not have played in the football game.

Let's just suppose for a second that she was not 14 and that she was legally capable of giving consent. When I was growing up, we were not allowed to have sex in the school bathroom. Not at 14, not at 15, not at 16, and not at 17. In fact, I think having sex in a school bathroom in and of itself violates the law.

There is just no excuse for letting this sort of thing go. I continue to be so severely disappointed by the state of Florida high school athletics.

If people in Liberty City want their young people to learn about to abide by the law, make them see that society will enforce the law. The kids will suffer but they will learn an important lesson about consequences. In particular, they will learn that their actions can have consequences to others.

Mr. W

MAN I THINK THEY SHOULD PLAY THE SEASON AND NOT BE ALLOWED TO PLAY IN THE PLAYOFFS. IF THIS WAS A NCCA SCHOOL ANYWAY THEY WOULD BE SUSPENDED FOR THE SEASON; BUT ITS NOT. LET THE KIDS PLAY. SO THE SENIORS AT THE SCHOOL CAN PLAY AND SHOW SCOUTS FROM COLLEGES WHAT THEY ARE MADE OF. FOOTBALL IS ALL SOME OF THE KIDS KNOW AND WANT TO GO TO COLLEGE BUT FOOTBALL IS THEIR ONLY KEY. I SAY LET THEM PLAY. SOME PARENTS CAN'T AFFORD A COLLEGE EDUCATION FOR THEIR KIDS BUT FOOTBALL CAN. THEY WEREN'T GONE WIN STATE THIS YEAR ANYWAY....THEY GONE WIN IT IN 2009.

C'mon now

I don't see how this is even a football issue? Was the player's crime during or after a game or something? The accused (Easterling) is a student, who happens to play football. Are all his teachers, who may or may not have known about it, getting fired too? He's not a professional athlete for a professional team. He should be dealt with as any other student would be. What if this happened during the off season, what would be the ramifications? If he was indeed inelgible, then take away last year's state championship and fire anyone involved with a cover up. But to suspend the football team of this year is ridiculous...this is not a like having a college team on probation.

c/of 85 bullpride

There are a lot of valid points made from a lot of people. Some were based on facts but a lot of what I just read was based on stupidity and just plain envy(jealousy)of MIAMI NORTHWESTERN SR. HIGH. Did MR. CREW let everyone know that he signed off on a letter for the kid to play, and now he is looking like a jack@$$. I didn't hear no one mention all of the educators that MNW has put into the world nor about the tradition the school carries in the education community. There are captains, seargents, majors, lawyers, doctors, and a lot of other successful garduates from MNW that I didn't hear about. This is not about MNW football, this is about one man's pride and how he wants to save his dignity as a BOSS. I agree those in charge should get fired,he should not have played in that game, just letting everyone know it would not have made a difference. But to try to rectify the situation by punishing innocent kids that is very manly Mr. Crew, and since Mr. FHSAA thinks it was so outrageous why didn't he say so at the beginning, and OH BY WAY TELL THE FHSAA TO SEND THE RECORD ATTENDANCE CHECK BACK you won't hear about that. This was mishandled from the beginning to the end and everyone involved should be held accountable, and if that is his final decision he should fire his self as well because he signed off on it. How comfortable would you feel about transferring to another school when you know no one is going to like you during your senior year. Mr. Crew you need to remember this is not one or two lives that you are talking about changing, this decision could be life changing for as many as 20 to 30 kids. We try to teach our kids to treat everyone with respect and let adults deal with adults, Mr. Crew I recommend that is exactly what you need to do and keep the kids out of this equation. There are a lot decisions we make that carry heavy repercussions and as adults we should know that,so to ALLL of those that were now is the time to deal with the repercussions. By the way this was written by a CLASS of 85 graduate of MNW that scored an 1160 on the SAT, and we were not an F school then because they hadn't removed all the top teachers and sent them to white schools for the bonuses yet. So when you decide to bring up the bad make sure you know the history about all the good, this one was for all the BULL HATERS, and regardless of the decision we will always have BULLPRIDE.

green

WTF??????? superintendent rudy crew is threatening to suspend the entire football season next year because some kids couldnt control their fucking hormones and some stupid adults couldnt deal with kids having sex.

Coach Killings has stepped down, the principal was removed from the school, the football player graduated, the girl is probably transferring-- so who EXACTLY will this move punish other than a shit load of kids who need this season to get scholarships? From players, to band to golden girls, the people who will be hurt the most by this didnt do anything!!!

MiSS

As a senior at Miami Northwestern Senior High school this upcoming 2007-2008 school year I would like to address a few things to those of you who think you know everything. For one I understand that Mr. Crew is considering suspending the football team for the 2007-2008 school year which I believe is an extreme punishment for something that happened last school year involving someone who is no longer a STUDENT at MNW. I understand that he may be upset due to the fact that there were no disciplinary actions against Antwain Easterling after he was arrested and charged with lewd and lascivious battery on a 14 year old girl (WHO NO LONGER ATTENDS MIAMI NORTHWESTERN SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL). This fact also leads to my next point that if you suspend the football team at MNW you might as well suspend every other football team in Miami-Dade County because there have been similar actions that have occurred at some of the other high school's in Dade, however, it did not come out. And as far as making the decision to suspend the football team I believe that it’s not the appropriate way to show disciplinary actions to this school or any other school. I mean what's done is done and like I stated before Antwain is no longer a student at MNW and he's not even apart of the football team anymore because he graduated from MNW on May 31,2007. Also I don't believe that the entire football team, cheerleaders, band, and athletic trainers should have to suffer for someone else' wrong doing. It was not the entire football team who had consensual sex with a 14 year old girl, it was not the entire football team who was arrested for lewd and lascivious battery, it was not the entire football team who was not issued a 10 day suspension for their misconduct, it was not the entire football team who didn't go to the police with the information (furthermore everyone on that football team wasn't even aware of what occurred until AFTER IT CAME OUT IN THE NEWS). In addition to that Mr. Crew was vey well AWARE of what was taking place within MNW in DECEMBER of 2006. And being that he knew in December he should have made his actions at that time or anytime within the 2006-2007 school year; the year in which ANTWAIN EASTERLING was still a student at Miami Northwestern! So to make the team suffer being that no discipline was enforced its not going to hurt him it's going to hurt the boys whose only way into college was through EARNING a scholarship from playing football. Understand that many of these boys stay out of trouble within the community due to the fact that they play for football for this team. If you make the decision to suspend this football team you're going to crush a lot of these boys' dreams of becoming college football players, professional football players, or even more important GOING to COLLEGE! You must understand that playing football for MNW is a lot of young boys' dreams that start in MIDDLE SCHOOL and even ELEMENTARY because it's their beacon of hope that they can make it, that they can have successful stories in their lives to tell to their children, grandchildren or what have you. Taking football away from them will send these boys back on the street doing things that may get them arrested or even killed. Playing football keeps them out of trouble and gives them the feeling that they can prove everyone wrong who said that they would never amount to anything. Miami Northwestern is not just an ordinary high school; we're a COMMUNITY SCHOOL that has strong support in what they believe in! And what we believe at this point is that to suspend this football team is not only immoral its WRONG its absolutely wrong!

terry snipes

As a high school coach for over 20 years and having been fortunate enough to have had a few state champions to my credit I pray that the state hands down the harshes punishment possible. Regardless of what may be being said every coach knew exactly what was taking place both on and off the field. And while we can all feel for the other kids, they also knew what was going on. The illegal sex, grade changes and other acts that are simply not acceptable. And everyone that knew: adults including coaches, teachers, parents and community leaders along with all the kids that knew and did absolutly nothing were willing to do what ever to win.

This is only one example of what is going on in high school sports. So please don't cry to loud about the injustice because it was the willingness to break the rules to win that got this school in trouble. So shut up and try to show some back bone and act like responsible adults. The community is watching and shall the message be screw the rules just win or strive for greatness by doing the right thing. And please don't play the race card it is an insult to every person of color that has achieved without breaking the rules.

DGrey

It is clear that the quality of education is second to that of football at MNW. After reading the previous posts, I have to ask the following:

What about the majority of students who will not go to college on a football scholarship or not go to college at all; what is to be done about them? Does anyone care?

If people were this passionate about the future of the youth in this community and got involved, perhaps the collective alumni could be proud of the entire student body at MNW.

When people say: "Don't punish the kids, football is the only thing they got going for them", I say "that's the problem!" Football is an extracurricular activity and if all the student has going for him or her is athletics, then he or she is in big trouble! Most athletes have short-lived and unsuccessful careers -- I can just hear it in the mind of one of these kids:
"Geez, I hope I don't sustain a serious injury when I get tackled, because all I know how to do is play football!"

Now before I get flamed for this post (which is from the heart-- because I do care about the children in this community), I agree that the punishment being considered is inappropriate for reasons previously mentioned.

The district decided to let Easterling play; the district decided to halt an investigation (criminal or not). If school board administrators are not going to hold themselves to high moral standards, how can the student body (football team included) at MNW be expected to do the same?

I hope you all can understand that there is a bigger problem here than football being halted for a season.

d boy

scenario: you are the principal and i walk into your office (Dope Boy) and tell you this boy is going to play and you or no one else better not say a word. If you do, you, your wife, your family, and anyone else will have a whole lot of problems (No what I mean).

What do you do?

Remember MNW football has a gambling circle like veags thousands of dollars are on the line every week. When guys are betting $1000 that #4 gets the ball on this play then what do you think the bet is for the game?

All of the people involved in this scandal was not willing to lose their career over this one boy when obviously they didn't even need him in the state game. So why did they do it?

Because MNW football is run by the streets

And your life and family is way more important than your job!

Tommy

Apparently Mr. Crew is clueless about who he's dealing with. You're dealing with kids from a school that sits in the heart of Liberty City, probably the meanest streets in the state of Florida . Many of those Liberty City thugs and drug dealers bet BIG MONEY on Northwestern High football. And not just on the score or outcome, but on stats, players, and even individual plays. It's been going on for years and will continue to happen. Those guys make more money in one night betting on a game than I see in two months as a banker. These thugs don't care about nothing but their money, and will do whatever necessary to harm those who get in the way of that. If Mr. Crew suspends football at Northwestern, he's pretty much a dead man walking.

when a adult commits a cime .He or she is charged . so why blame the kids for adult actions. This is for all the football coaches .If you ask a player to give his or her all. The minute that player gets in any trouble you turn your back on them. Your just gut-less

If the Miami Northwestern football season is suspended, who will it actually be helping or hurting? The school wouldn't be the only thing punishied, but a whole community will be punished. Many people from the city, state, and nation are looking forward to watching Miami Northwestern play this year. Even though the school is not performing well on an academic level, suspending the season is not going to resolve the problem. The only motivation for some kids to go to school is through extracurricular activities. Football would not be the only activity affected from a decision like this. What happens to the cheerleaders and the band? This problem could have been resolved if the adults would have handled the situation properly, so why punish the kids. I do agree that something needs to be done, but this is not the NFL or NBA. There has to be a better solution.

First of all, MNW coaches are as dumb as they come. If any of you saw the same state game that I saw, you would have realized that they would have won the game easily without Easterling. They should have just suspended him and won the game, and this situation would'nt even be a topic today. As for firing the coaches, who would they hire, sure they would have loads of talent, but what about the pressures of winning from the same dope-boys that were spoken of in another post (that's real) Could you imagine being a head coach and getting shot at if you lose to carol city.

Sure it would not be fair to the kids to suspend the program, but in college if the NCAA invesitgates a school and finds wrong doings, that school goes on probation, meaning less scholarships, and no post-season play, (I'm sure you UM fans understands this). That's not fair to the fres, soph of that team but, that's life. It was not fair to all the innocent people who lost their jobs ENRON, but that's life.

Did anyone else notice what the oline-man that transfered from edison said in the MH article
"I don't want to play anywhere else,'' said offensive lineman Brandon Washington, who transferred from Edison High in the spring. ``I want the chance to help this team repeat as state champions. I want to be a Bull.'' He transfered legally for the academics right, He left Edison who went up a grade, to MNW that remains an F. And this is O.K. Rightttt......
I leave all of you MNW faithful with this one final question....

WHAT IF IT WAS YOUR 14 YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER???

EVERYBODY LETS DESTROY THESE INNOCENT KIDS DREAMS, BECAUSE THATS WHAT MR. CREW AND OTHERS WHO AGREE WANTS TO DO, ITS A PROVEN FACT THAT KIDS WHO PLAY SOME SORT OF SPORTS OR MUSIC INSTRUMENT ARE MORE LIKELY TO GRADUATE THAN KIDS JUST GOING TO SCHOOL AND NOT BEING INVOLED OR ANYTHING, THIS CAN DESTROY SCHOLARSHIPS, WHY IS IT TOOOO LATE, WHY ARE THEY DOING SOMETHING NOW INSTEAD OF LAST YEAR, PUNISH THE PRINCIPAL, COACH, ETC... THERE ARE IN CONTROL, MANY PEOPLE WANT TO PUNISH NW BECAUSE MAYBE NOW THEY FEEL LIKE THEY COULD WIN A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP, NOT BECAUSE THEY CARE ABOUT THOSE KIDS EDUCATION, AND PEOPLE TALK ABOUT BEING A F SCHOOL. THE PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM SHOULD HAVE DONE SOMETHING ABOUT THAT AND MAKE CHANGES LONG TIME AGO, ITS BEEN F SCHOOL, THIS NOT RIGHT AND I DONT EVEN RESIDE IN MIAMI AREA, IM GOING TO DO MY BEST AS A FATHER, EDUCATOR, HUMAN BEING, TO MAKE SURE THOSE KIDS ARE BEING LOOKED AFTER, PLEASE IF YOUR IN THE MIAMI AREA DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS PROTEST!!!!!!! d boy,

I hate to say it, but we're probably the only two on this board that realizes how much the streets play a factor in Miami Northwestern football.

Everyone who actually reads this post will probably look at it and go, that's ridiculous. And I guarrentee everyone that does probably has no clue of what attending Northwestern as a student is like, so they wouldn't have a clue as to whether to believe it or not.

If you don't believe that the streets play a big role in what goes on, on that field; you better ask Roland Smith about his vehicle after they lost the Soul Bowl back in 2002. And you also better find out the truth and what the REAL reason was for Antwain Easterling getting to start in that championship game.

MIAMISTUDENT

I REALLY THINK THAT THE UNIV OF FLA FOOTBALL, TRUSTEE , ALUMNI, DO HAVE SOME TO DO WITH THIS, THATS THE RUMOR RUNNING AROUND HERE BECAUSE MANY PEOPLE SAY THAT THE GATORS WAS PUSHIN 4 THIS KID HARD A, EASTERLING BUT WHEN S.MISS PICK HIM UP , THIS HAPPEN MONTHS LATER BECAUSE MANY OF THE KIDS ON NW FOOTBALL TEAM NOW ARE LEANING TOWRDS HEADING TOWARD TO THE CANES , THIS IS A SAD SITUATION, I HOPE SOME 1 INVESTIGATES THIS,

305MIA

I WOULDNT DOUBT IT BECAUSE THERE MANY UF ALUMNI THATS RUNNIG THE STATE OF FL, WHETHER ITS PUBLIC SCHOOLS, THE GOVT, ETC... THEY WOULD BE BEHIND SOME EVIL SHIT LIKE THIS. DAMN KULT!!!

All 'adults' that knew should be fired. That includes any District Administration, Principal, Counselors, Athletic Director, and any/all football coaches.

I agree that the suspending the season is wrong for the kids.. Let them play but put a penalty on it like no matter the score it goes as a loss, no post season, no special trips, etc..

IF Mr. Crew, does nothing or doesn't make it almost a 'death' penalty, expect the Florida High Schools Athletics Association to step in and do it for him.

I hope that those remember the girl, her family and what they are going through. I hope those that 'degrade' her don't have daughters or sisters that this could happen to..

A Tru Bull

Being a former top athlete and graduate c/o "04" and now a college graduating senior. All I want to know is by suspending the football team for this upcoming season would serve at WHAT purpose??? because everyone who had an involvment in the whole situation has already had displinary actions issued towards them. Now all that would take place is hurting the kids involved in this year season "Which is totally unfair". And for all the hater's LAY DOWN!!!don't get mad because "The West"
IS JUST THAT REALIST HIGH SCHOOL....
So many people want to scream that she was or is 14 (whatever) and he was 18....but they are both in high school...when did age matter when they decided to input 9th grd in high schools period...So you telling me a male senior suppose to consider the fact of age when he is placed in the same enviroment...then on top of that, girls these days are willing to give up their GOODS to these young men without any problems..MAN PLEASE....Reality speaking everyone knows Seniors do that, thats why to me parenting play a major role in this issue..because when I was entering high school I was taught the meaning of being a male senior FRESHMEAT....so basically it starts from the home...Her mother's bad. Because it wasn't rape it was consentual sex...HELLO so who's really wrong? it surely isn't the guy

Kevin

Yea, they can play ball, but thier as sharp as watermelon. Come on, EDUCATION first, athletics second. This school is an F graded school. 3/4 of the grads never go to collage. That’s what’s wrong with this school, community, etc... If these “Athletes” where A or B students, they would not need athletic scholarships, they could get academic scholarships. This is just a cycle of poverty and ignorance that until it’s addressed, will continue.

Black Teacher

Yes I am a 27 year old teacher in Miami-Dade. I also played football here in Miami-Dade and received a atheletic scholarship. I do not hate Northwestern, but as a parent, teacher, and coach this situation deserves to be handle by any means. Let's not forget the pay out by the drug dealers to players or remember two years ago Northwestern lost the state semi championship Coach Roland Smith's car was car was destroyed. And let's not forget about when a "fan" slapped a assistance coach's wife in the stand because the "fan" felt the coach wasnt doing his job correctly. I am product of Black Miami so do not tell me I do not know what is going on at "Da West". Northwestern is not even consider the powerhouse of Dade in last 15 years. Miami has Carol City and Southridge, therefore stop your crying about "everybody hates on Da West" bull. Things like this is the reason why Northwestern's atheletes do not make it in college. For example Big Cliff(FSU-now a thug in Tallahassee no longer plays), Levy Brown, Alex Forston, Taurean Charles, and many more. Like I said I am a product of Black Miami.

Reality Check

@A Tru Bull

Upon reading your comment: the fact that you could have graduated high school is appalling and the truest condemnation of the state of education. THAT is what is really wrong.

The situation at MNHS is sad and I feel for the kids on the squad, I hope that their season does not get suspended for the sake of their futures... BUT if the season was suspended, I would hope that the community would take a hard look at themselves and their school and realize THEY ARE NOT DOING THEIR JOBS.

I must remind you, their job description is to prepare young men and women to survive and succeed in the real world. While some could argue that being a football player is just that, I would hope that you could look at the bigger picture and see that the real crime is not the statutory rape and the subsequent cover-up, but rather the failure to teach these men (young and old alike) responsibility, character, dignity, discipline and morality.

Class of 77

As an alumni of MNW I know first hand that these issues are bigger than you all may know. The boys in the streets have their faults in the things that they do but this problem was going on way back when Dr. Abney was the principle at MNW and Mr. Peavy was the disciplinary at the school. The boys in the hood respected them, and as for football Coach Frazier was our coach at the time and I was a player on the team ,we had to show our progress report every marking period to ensure we were eligibile to play. The boys in the hood may be wrong at their profession but they take care of the boys at the West. They give back to the community so to speak. My son played on this championship team and I would receive phone calls from his mom about how he would come home with all the new Jordans that she did not pay for.The pressure to play at the west is deep but the ability to play at the west is an expierence.I know first hand I transfered from a school on 95th street in order to get the exposure,I loved it.To speak about making the grades (ie)success stories.I am a senior sales specialist as Lowe's Home Improvement in ATL.15 years of Military Seervice, own my apparel bussines and doing well,My Sister Class of 79 An Asst.Principal soon to be a principal in the South Dade area,My younger sister,Graduate of Howard Univ,Law School of Univ. of Miami and a very successful business women who does numerous speaking engagements,This is just my family alone who grew up within a 1 mile radius of the mean streets of Liberty City.Do not punnish the program deal with the adults Bring Billy Rolle back to the west.Oh yes I do have reservations for the game in Texas on the 15th of Sept.Thank you Killroy for all that you have done for the west.Bull Pride Class of 77.

Get it Right!

Ok, the word is out, the football program will go on for the upcoming season. Hallelujah! Now, let's finish getting the cancer out of the school. Take the ax out and chop anyone who had to do with the cover-up. Firstly, Easterling would not have played in the championship game without the approval of the head coach Roland Smith - cut him, and I am sure the assistant head coach, pork chop (??)- cut him too. If you remember, Coach Billy Rolle was pressured into resigning in 2000-01, and I can specifically remember when asked why he was not coaching in 1999-00, Roland "Patty" Smith stated he was working on something. What he was working on was stabbing Coach Rolle in the back so he could take his job. Since when does a man not coach this year, and come back the next year as the head coach. He and that da_ _ Steven Gallon conspired to get Rolle out, so that Gallon could bring in his friend "Patty" as head coach the next year. Gallon had to have someone in there that he could control – Patty, Patty. Well - what goes around, comes around. It may have taken a while, but Patty and Chop are going to get what they deserve. But you see when you do good, good will follow. Billy Rolle and Terrance Craig went down south and took a loosing program to a state championship in two years. As for Steve Gallon, people are afraid to speak out about him - what's up with that??. Although he has a doctorate's degree, he is not very bright. What self-respecting educator would allow himself to be seen on a nationally televised documentary that exhibited such poor taste. It certainly did not portray Northwestern in a good light. Coaches and players fighting and cursing like they were in a street brawl. He shouldn't have been transferred downtown, he should have been FIRED!! He is the real cause of this mess now. Steven Gallon is the cancer that is running rapid in Miami Northwestern. If you get rid of all of his loyalists, you can move onto the business of educating students and allowing football, basketball, track & field, etc. to be what they were designed to be - extra-curricular activities and a means to allow students to receive an education that they may not normally be able to pay for. Also, I hope they move Killings from the school, otherwise the traces of the cancer will still remain. Gallon has been seen numerous times at the football practices and overheard giving advice to coaches and staff at MNW as how to handle certain situations. Gallon, Killings, Smith, Porkchop and anyone else associated to them should be banned from the campus and allow the principal and coaches that remain to turn this ship around. If you throw out the rotten apples, they will not affect those that remain. KEEP IT REAL!!! By the way, someone should keep a real close eye on the BIG MONEY that comes through that school (and I am not hating on it – the West has it like that). If you can keep close tabs on the money, the corruption will be minimal.

Mr. Crew have to start at the top. Fire all who knew and covered up the situation. All administrators and coaches have to go, period. The program did not start or cause the problem, the people in charge did. We cannot punish the kids. Secondly, the hell with football if the damn school is going to be an F or D. If 25 Sr. athletes on that great team did't even get offers why the hell are they playing football and what the hell the coaches are doing. I coach for a struggling team and every Sr that wants to play football in college gets an offer or invite to play at some school. And we don't have 25% of the West talent. All city football programs should be ashamed. Every other top school in florida and in other states top football programs yearly have guys who do their work and qualify for NCAA competition. If we are not promoting that, the hell with football. But then again......FCAT scores are not putting 25000 in the OB or 10000 at Traz...damn

what123

lilhaiti as far as it goes we shouldnt talk about f schools at least the west for a while wasnt in that situation for that long as edison wether its 5 or 6 yrs its pathetic.congrats your a D school you seem so damn proud of that be proud of a C or higher not a D.Wasnt Edison in the verge of getting suspended and that was the whole school. They got lucky real lucky..

Now as for Suspending these boys is wrong they deserve to play this year and to say to them that there season is over and they have to transfer is impossible since its aganist the rules to transfer to a school just for football so they would all not play. Crew wont do it and the county knows that
