Will Northwestern football really be suspended?

Miami-Dade School superintendent Rudy Crew is reportedly considering suspending NW's football team for next season.

Do you think Crew's decision if he goes through with it, is correct? Is it too excessive penalizing this year's team, or is ANY punishment too late at this point, seven months after the scandal involving former RB Antwain Easterling came to light?

As said by many, punish the adminstrators who make the decisions. These young men are using football to get ahead in life. Yes, academics is #1 and should be the first priority, but if the Coaches are not supporting passing grades to play football, then they are at fault....Coach Carter did it. There are alot of inspiring true life stories out there that should motivate these coaches to help these young people to care about their academics with football.

My daughter attends MNW and it disappoints me that the school has a F rating. Parents should get more involve with their children and their school work which I think alot of these students are lacking. Parental guidance and care.

Let's all continue to support MNW becuse it is a great school, academically and athletics and with this pride let's encourage our children how important education is in life and how one incident can change the life of so many and why the greatest fallback in life is the education you receive!

As a former Dade county coach who faced northwestern each year I can honestly say that the players at NW are very respectable student. I fact I was almost shocked to see that after viewing how arrogant and ignorant their coaching staff was. I don't believe that the student should be punish by the foolish acted of the coaches and administrators but keep this in mind. Miami central a few years back got the state championship dream crushed when they played a student who was not eligible. This had to be done to NW because if it didn't happen the way it did then it would be fine for a star athlete to get away with murder... no rape.

@ Black Teacher

I understand what you are saying and its true, but please don't include Taurean Charles in that list of yours because yes we know what happened at "The Gators" but that didn't stop him from getting educated he probably isn't at one of the best football programs anymore but he is in Daytona playing at Bethune Cookman University therefore he surely doesn't fit in that category you put him in.

@ Reality Check

I agree with what you are saying also and its true to a certain stand point. Also yes I graduated c/0 "04" on a full athletic scholarship with a 3.2 at the time so it not a could have graduated its a FACT that I did do so and about to graduate again from college

IT'S AMAZING TO SEE SOME OF THE COMMENTS, I THINK DR CREW MADE THE RIGHT DECSION CLEARLY THE KIDS ARENT THE ONES AT FAULT BUT TO THE PARENTS OF SOME THESE KIDS YOU'VE ALLOWED YOUR KIDS TO BE PUT IN THIS POSITION BY ALLOWING YOUR KIDS TO DEPEND SOLEY ON FOOTBALL AS THE ONLY MEANS TO BE SUCESSFUL IN LIFE OR GO TO COLLEGE. SO FOR THE PARENTS WHO HAVE NOT DONE THEIR JOB, EXCEPT SOME OF THE RESPONSIBILTY. GROWING UP IN THE CITY THERE ARE ALOT OF CONCERNS, BUT ALOT OF SUCESSFUL PEOPLE HAVE GROWN UP IN THE CITY WITH THOSE SAME CONCERNS. AS A WHOLE, THE NW COMMUNITY HAS FAILED THESE KIDS.

Dr. Crew made the right decision; however, it lacks force for the fact that he knew about it and didn't step up. He could have easily stepped in and said 'Easterling is not playing' but he did not do so.
At least this is a start of something new. I hope Dr. Crew's probation and 2.5 grade point average proposal isn't put in place just at Northwestern. It will be district wide. Again, it's a shame he has to implement it when he's part of the problem.

You wonder sometimes why a lot of our college athletes are out of control and its because they have had no accountability. They looked up to, flattered, have their butts kissed by alumni, fans, the media and they get a big head. These measures could give our students accountability. If a truly talented kid puts effort into his school work and keeps the 2.5 grade point average, how much more attractive will he become to the colleges? They don't have to worry about whether or not the kid will make it. Kids need to see this is a win-win situation for them.

Black Teacher

Easterling is not going to SMU! He was arrested back in the Spring. He is nothing but a thug who smokes weed and carries guns. Remember he was suspended for the classic game aganist Booker T. You know for what? Carrying a damn AK-47. That there should have been a clue he was trouble. What I do not understand is how he was suspended for that game but wasnt for any game in their season.

This proves to me that Northwestern doesnt care about molding black boys into African-American Men. Has anybody noticed that Fredricka Wilson or Kendrick Meeks did not ask to save the season to the public? They know blacks have to stop thinking that atheletics has to be our excuse or way out of the "ghetto".

Bull Fans/Alumnus please help this school teach its youth and not just help with ticket sales. As a young black teacher I am ashamed to say Miami-Dade would have to offer more than zone money to teach there. Zone did not do what they taught it would do. School Board taught more money would attract teachers from A schools. One older teacher explained to me "Why would I go from sugar to something worst then shit".

Like in Spike Lee's "School Daze"

A recently passed Indiana law decriminalizes some teen sex. See the link at

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,288594,00.html

Does this law make sense? Are the citizens of Indiana more progressive than Florida's? Are the school administrators too judgemental? My person opinion is YES to all questions. Antwain Easterling and his girl friend had a relationship. Should they have been discipled for having sex at school? I think so ... just as any other student at any other high school should have been. Should this matter have been escalated to a point of destroying people's careers? I think not. Maybe the people who sit high above the moral ground of us humans and pass verdicts as if they have never committed acts of malfeasance should have their own past lives closely examined. Let's see how they pass the scrutiny of us moral infidels.

what123,

I am proud of a D. Why? Because last year there were 5 "F" schools in Dade. This year there are 26. This year the test was HARDER, with science added. If you knew ANYTHING about the FCAT you would know what there is to be proud of. We weren't just a "D"...we were 8 points away from a C...in a year that the STATE projected us to FAIL. Some of the biggest gains in the state, and we have arguably some of the biggest in the nation. You do realize the West was an F not too long ago, correct? Surely you understand the issues faced in Little Haiti with the high level of ESOL students.

I wasn't talking about the FCAT until dagame made a false statement, which was corrected. If you have a problem? The facts don't lie. I'm not just a Little Haiti resident :)

Northwestern got off easy. I know a lot of stuff about the West that they would hate to have aired out hahaha

what123

lilhaiti first off i did go to an F school got the hell out of there and went to an A school and i have to say its way diffrent education my friend and the school was mostly spanish so the language doesnt matter. Sure we say about the esol students and all that is the problem but thats not happening at broward whos has a heavy hispanic in the classroom especially west side of broward. sure dagame might of made a false statement but edison got way more lucky almost got there school closed down but Crew gave them a chance because of the football team as well.. Every school has issues that doesnt get out there so the same could go to edison, central, krop it doesnt matter. and a D is a D cant say oh we were so close to a C and what not so please go ahead and be happy with it while A and B schools laugh at you.

Does Frank Martin coach at Northwestern?

BULL??

Ok. Everything that has been said on this board makes some kind of sense at least. However, we must deal with the issue at hand. This is not about Dr. Crew trying to make an EXAMPLE out of The West, but about laying down the law. Everyone is so concerned about the football team....THEY'RE GOING TO PLAY THIS SEASON!! No, they won't have their coaches, but they will have each other. Although the coaches, helped them a great deal along the way, it was the players who went 15-0 and won a state championship. If The West's team is as good as everyone proclaims them to be, then they will be able to pick up the pieces and move on. Also, I thought they were called STUDENT ATHLETES. Not athlete students. The "football is their only way out" excuse is MEANINGLESS. Black people are always complaining about the "white man" causing our failure, but we're doing it to ourselves. We've become so wrapped up in just trying to get out, we're willing to do WHATEVER we have to. Instead of hoping that our young men can go to college on a football scholarship, why not ensure they can get an academic scholarship? The REAL question is HOW SUPPORTIVE OF OUR YOUNG MEN ARE WE??? We've allowed ourselves to stoop so low as to say that they only way they can go to college is because of football. I must admit, that even as a freshman at Miami Carol City, I believe Northwestern is one of the most influential schools in the community regardless of their grade on the FCAT. However, I do believe that the team is strong enough to continue to do good. The people who should be punished have been. So, why not move on just as Antwain Easterling and the little girl did? He is still playing football at college and HE was the problem. So, why even consider suspending the rest of the team who had NO involvement? All the suspending should have been happening when the incident first occured. You can't pick up spilled milk. So, don't try. What's done is done and it's time to move on. GET THESE BOYS SOME STABILITY AND LET THEM CONTINUE TO DO WHAT THEY LOVE!!!

shawn

Make sure NW has Turf Shoes in Texas, They will be at a huge disadvantage with regular cleats SMU switched to turf in 2005

MsD

This incident was highly publicized once the girl's mother went public about her promiscuois daughter (her words) had consensual sex with Easterling and several other guys however until the mother ask for charges to be pressed, school officials did nothing. Leading up to the state championship game, again, it was highly publicized that school officials were meeting to decide if Easterling should play in the state championship game. At this time, school superintendent Crews should have stepped in, as the 'leader', and said no, Easterling will not play. Other actions that needed to be dealt with should have been. Northwestern should have been more active on Crews' 'to do' list when, through the years, the turnover of principals was happening often or there was 'dual' principals and when the school suffered academically but not the medical magnet (which consists of mainly students from affluent neighborhoods). Crews, as the leader, should put some stability in proficient staffing of educators at The West, basic necessities to ensure success, and teachers that 'want' to teach at The West not teachers who have been forced there.

A Dade Teacher, unfortunately

That's right DR CREW!!! Make the white public feel better by firing NW's staff members and coaches because of this "massive cover-up"...besides, black teachers and administrators at THAT school who have daughters of their own probably WOULD cover-up a RAPE just so that they could win a high school state championship game! I'm sure many of those guilty of the cover-up got paid millions of dollars from all the dope boys on the streets for helping allow Antwaine (the thug and gun totin' villain) to play in the game. Who cares about black little girls anyway, right? Like many of the posts said, "The Year of The Bull" proved that these people, coaches and other staff at the west are just animals, right? They didn't receive college degrees and coach of the year awards...they were never voted teacher of the year or never neglected their own families to be at Northwestern working with "under-priviledged" children...these animals never assured that their student-athletes kept grades up or took ACT and SAT tests to try to get into someone's college without the help or involvement of these children's parents....so I say, go 'head Dr. Crew with yo' bad-self!! You have made teaching here in Miami-Dade County something to look forward to.

robert_61

if the bull's season is suspended, then that would be wrong. before i forget: the comments by "black teacher" are embarassing. he calls himself an educator, yet cannot spell correctly or use proper english. but he wants the school to suffer.
remember the mcduffie riots in '80? hasn't liberty city suffered enough? give a damn for the city and do something constructive, not destructive.
