Any questions?

Got a question for Bob. I know the football section comes out tomorrow, but who do you think is the best team in Broward this season and why? Can anyone in Broward really win the state title?
Posted by: Nicky B | August 28, 2007 at 07:01 PM
Andre. Who do you think are the next best teams after Northwestern and Booker T. Washington in Dade? Can anybody else in Dade win state?
Posted by: Nicky B | August 28, 2007 at 07:02 PM
Q: Aaron Winchester, the running back for the North Miami Beach Chargers had an outstanding Junior season rushing for over 1,300 yards and 16 TD's.
Should we go ahead and hand Winchester the county rushing title for 2007 right now, or does he have some competition we should look forward to?
A: I think Winchester is a heavy favorite, but don't hand him the trophy by any means. There are guys like Lamar Miller of Killian, Eduardo Clements of Booker T., Jakhari Gore of Columbus, the NW junior crew of Daquan Hargrett and Tyresse Jones, Paris Cotton of Hialeah, George Baker at Carroll.
As you can see lots of backs that will challenge for that honor.

How do you think Columbus will do this year?

I think St. Thomas will again be Broward's top team. The Raiders' backfield is LOADED. Jeremiah Harden is a stud. He's one of the few high school players I would pay to watch. Gio Bernard may be the best back in 10th grade in the nation.
I think STA's lines (the only weaknesses now) will be greatly improved by the time the playoffs come around. The Raiders can finally break through and win a title.
As to Broward's other contenders, whoever wins the 6A region (Boyd Anderson, Cypress Bay or Deerfield Beach) will have a tough time with Miami Northwestern in the state semifinals. If the Broward team wins that game, a title could be had.
In Class 2A, Chaminade-Madonna or American Heritage could win a title. I don't see any other teams contending for one (although Dillard may have a chance in 5A).
Posted by: Bob Emanuel Jr. | August 28, 2007 at 07:06 PM
I honestly think NW and Booker T. are on another level if they play to their potential and are fortunate to avoid injuries and letdowns.
In Class 1A, Dade Christian has a legit shot at the title if they have improved enough to take down powerhouses like Fort Meade and Glades Day, and that remains to be seen.

WHEN IS THE HIGH SCHOOL TV SHOW COMING OUT? IS IT REALLY A TV SHOW? WHAT IS IT GOING TO SHWO?
Posted by: DJ SAMS | August 28, 2007 at 07:11 PM
Q: What do yall think about Godfrey the QB "phenom" from Central?
A: Godfrey has a rocket for an arm. I've seen him launch the ball between 50 and 60 yards. He's still only a sophomore and needs to continue to hone his overall skills as a QB. But his accuracy is improving from what I saw in practices that I visited this summer.

WHY IS PATRICK JOHNSON THE BEST CORNERBACK IN THE COUNTRY? DIDN'T PEOPLE SEE WHAT MY BOY BRANDON HARRIS DID ON SATURDAY TO THAT SUMMAVILLE TEAM?
Posted by: DJ SAMS | August 28, 2007 at 07:12 PM
Are the Gators going to get any players from Dade or Broward? Who are the Gators recruiting down here? Why does it seem like UM is kicking so much butt in recruiting and the national champs aint got nobody yet from here?
Posted by: AL E GATOR | August 28, 2007 at 07:14 PM
Columbus has the talent it needs to win District 14-6A. They've got a solid o-line and a gifted backfield. The defenses has a lot of new faces and will be the key to how far they go in the playoffs.
The Explorers' would-be first round opponent will be from District 13-6A, which likely means Central or NW. That's tough right off the bat.
Posted by: Andre | August 28, 2007 at 07:14 PM
Q: Patrick Johnson.
A: Patrick has the size, speed and athletic ability to be one of the best, if not the best, DB ever in Broward.
He is bright and knows how to position his body on the field. He can play man or zone. Plus, he signed with University of Miami. I don't know about Brandon Harris (have not seen him), so I can't compare the two.

Belen looked strong in the spring and in their kickoff classic. what do you think of this team this year?
Posted by: Jose | August 28, 2007 at 07:17 PM
Q: Gators
A: The Gators will inevitably sign a player or two from here. But they signed such a large class last year that their number of available scholarships is likely down.

Bob. Chaminade got killed 35-14 by HH. Is it because Coach G left?
Posted by: chaminadeLUVA | August 28, 2007 at 07:19 PM
Q: TV show.
A: The first one tapes next week and will be up on Wednesday.
It should be entertaining. I'll probably stumble through it and will get frustrated after 18 takes, so that will probably be even better. Maybe we can do a bloopers roll at the end of the season.
Posted by: Bob Emanuel Jr. | August 28, 2007 at 07:19 PM
Andre...nice job here! What was your experience like traveling with the BTW team? How fast is Davon Johnson in person? Who is the HUGE OL (77?) that they have?
Posted by: 86Cane | August 28, 2007 at 07:19 PM
Q: WHY IS PATRICK JOHNSON THE BEST CORNERBACK IN THE COUNTRY? DIDN'T PEOPLE SEE WHAT MY BOY BRANDON HARRIS DID ON SATURDAY TO THAT SUMMAVILLE TEAM?
A: Patrick Johnson is there because he is legitamately a top prospect in the country.
But I will AGREE that Brandon Harris is GROSSLY UNDERRATED BY EVERY RECRUITING SERVICE.
This kid needs to be 5-star material. He will go to a power like UM or UF and become an immediate stud. He's got the grades, the ability and that little something special to put a team on his back and carry them to victory.
I mean on the tape I watched of the Summerville game when I got back to Miami, you can see just how sick his make-up speed is when he got a hand on throws he looked like he had no business getting to.
Purely amazing speed.

How does the Killian team look this year apart from their star RB?
Killian Cougar PRIDE Call of 1980!
S-O-U-L, we got soooouuulll, Cougars got SOUL!
Posted by: 86Cane | August 28, 2007 at 07:22 PM
Q: Chaminade.
A: No. A few players left, which hurt more than the coach's departure. Al Lang is a good coach. Trust me. Look for the Lions to be much improved this week.
I'm not making excuses (South Broward DOMINATED), but LB Tarik Rollins got injured early for Chaminade. LB Jordan Futch went down early in the second half as well. Both injuries has a huge impact. But, again, South Broward looked legit!

Dre, there were a few early questions on the other thread related to Dade. You may want to tackle a few of those.
Posted by: Bob Emanuel Jr. | August 28, 2007 at 07:24 PM
86Cane,
The trip was great! A chance to see the kind of preparation that goes into a road trip like this, which really felt like it was a preparation for a bowl game with the pomp and circumstance.
Davon is so fast, on some of those TD throws, he slowed down caught and then sped up again and still burned those Summerville DBs by a good 5-10 yards.
A little known fact the grass at the stadium was left very high, giving it that feel like when a carpet is getting old. Even that wasn't enough to slow him or BTW down.
As for #77, that is sophomore Jose Jose. Yes, that's his name and grade. He is 6-3, 320 pounds. Still raw, but has plenty of time to work on getting good at his position. They play him at tackle for the most part.

here's the question that's been all over the message boards all summer. donovan varner or george baker?
Posted by: 305 | August 28, 2007 at 07:28 PM
Belen fans, I believe I have underrated this year's team and only because this team lost a lot of solid veterans from the past 2 successful seasons.
But as a 28-0 blowout in the spring vs. Gables and a near-win vs. very talented Columbus demonstrate, Belen will again be a district contender. When I saw that Edison had dropped to Class 3A, I feared for Belen.
No longer.
This team can and will contend with Pace and Edison to win the district crown or at least make the playoffs again.

Bob...what was the injury to Futch? How serious?
Posted by: 86Cane | August 28, 2007 at 07:33 PM
Killian is my early pick to win District 16-6A
They have the best junior in the state in Lamar Miller and a can throw the ball from what I saw in the spring with QB Ricky Rowe and a few big WR they have.
Their defense should also be solid enough and Steve Smith is one of the county's top coaches.
The Cougars are in good shape.
Posted by: Andre | August 28, 2007 at 07:33 PM
T.Y. Hilton.
He'll have to be for Miami Springs to have a chance in District 14-6A.
I know all the BTW WR can return kicks effectively. Lamar Miller proved how good he was last year at Killian.
Get back to me after I see a few games this weekend.
Posted by: Andre | August 28, 2007 at 07:36 PM
Has the (cold) relationship between Killian and the U thawed recently since the coaching changes?
Posted by: 86Cane | August 28, 2007 at 07:38 PM
The Varner-Baker issue can only be settled on the field.
Both guys looked good at combines, but this is where it counts - in games.
I had Varner rated higher since earlier in the summer, but Baker has made tremendous strides.
Let's see who's a camp kid and who's a real RB.
Posted by: Andre | August 28, 2007 at 07:39 PM
86Cane,
Don't worry about Futch. He's ok. He suffered from bad cramping. That field was HOT! With a heat index likely over 100 and playing on that artificial turf, I could see how it happened.
His legs cramped up early in the second half. He got up, took about 10-15 steps, then fell. His teammates had to carry him off the field.
He was on crutches after the game, but said he was fine. He said his whole body, from his "[butt] on down" cramped up.
I spoke with Al Lang over the weekend. Futch is fine.

Get those questions in. Only 20 minutes remaining.
Posted by: Bob Emanuel Jr. | August 28, 2007 at 07:41 PM
About Killian and UM, I'll say this. UM is already recruiting Lamar Miller hard. And remember Steve Smith was at Hialeah when Miami nabbed Adewale Ojomo last year.
So it's a strong possibility.

Dre,
Here are a few questions from the early thread:
What do y'all think about Godfrey the QB "phenom" from Central? thanks
Who are some of the MNW underclassmen that look to be future D1 prospects?
I know of Jones, Hagrett, and Lamb at RB but who else (especially in the secondary where they are young)?
Posted by: Bob Emanuel Jr. | August 28, 2007 at 07:43 PM
About the NW secondary, there wasn't a lot to write home about vs. Deerfield.
The Bulls do have a sophomore on the D-line Todd Chandler (6-1, 265) that looked good. And sophomore linebacker Michael Ross (5-10, 172) caught my eye too on a few plays.

What do you think of Jo Goodman as the latest Gater homer even though he graduated from Alabama birmingham and is honor bound to hate the gators
Posted by: Thomas the Tank Engine | August 28, 2007 at 07:56 PM
Well, he quickly turned into a Gator Homer. I don't know how it happened. I swear they must put something in the Gatorade. Maybe the fresh Gatorade is mesmerizing.
It is embarrassing though. Joe was a SEC guy with 'Bama ties. Now, he's drinking the KoolAid. It's a shock.
Wake up Joe. It's not too late.
Posted by: Bob Emanuel Jr. | August 28, 2007 at 07:57 PM
I don't buy it! Say it ain't so. You can't take the Alabama out of Joe.
Posted by: Andre | August 28, 2007 at 07:59 PM
Is it 8 yet?
Posted by: Bob Emanuel Jr. | August 28, 2007 at 07:59 PM
Thanks for all the question guys. It was fun. We'll do it again next week.
And remember, get your questions in early next week!
Posted by: Bob Emanuel Jr. | August 28, 2007 at 08:00 PM
That's it I guess. It's 8 p.m. by my watch. Thanks everyone.
And once again, OUTSTANDING JOB BY THE 3-0-5 as usual!
With some Canes fans sprinkled in and always welcome.
Until next time,
Dre
