Getting ready for summer camp

As spring football came to an end last Friday in South Florida, the focus now turns to instruction and competition that will be available at team camps from Miami to Ann Arbor and everywhere in between.

These summer camps are where young men get a taste of what college life will be about when they have to live on their own for three days with others their own age.

The camps provide daily instruction as well as giving colleges a chance to see some of the top talent in the country.

Most camp sessions cost in the $300.00 range for full-time campers, who sleep and eat at the facility, to $150.00 for commuters of the particular camp.

Locally, the popular D1 Camp, which is held at Nova Southeastern University in Davie, begins on June 12 with a quarterback school camp and continues on for the impressive skills camp from June 13-15, linemen camp (June 17-19) and a kicking camp that is also held June 17-19.

For more information on this camp, call 561-688-6016 or click: www.d-1footballcamps.com.

For those linemen willing to put it all on the line against athletes from all over the state and into Georgia and Alabama, the Down & Dirty Linemen Camp, is held in three sessions at Stetson University in Deland (18 miles west of Daytona Beach).

At this camp, each athlete is paired with players their own size and grade level. Much like team camps, the experience is very much like a college orientation.

Session 1 runs from June 25-27; the second session lasts from June 28-30, and the final session starts on July 1 and runs to the 3rd.

There are also numerous 7-on-7 tournaments such as the one at the University of Central Florida this Saturday (9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.), which we will keep you updated on.

This Saturday will also see the Mario Cristobal Football Camp get started with a June 7 event at Winter Springs High School, and June 8 at Pharmed Arena on FIU’s University Park Campus. The final early summer event will take place on June 22 at South Plantation High School. High school students entering grades 9-12 are eligible to participate in the camps.

For further information, call the FIU football office at 305-348-4150.

Remember, we will have ongoing camp dates and information from across the state of Florida.
