Lawal McCray is in as head coach at Ely

While many had believed that James Jones could be the answer to turning Ely’s football program around, his job at his alma mater lasted one year when the former University Florida Gator and Detroit Lion running back decided to spend more time with his family in Tampa.

Now, as summer practice is less than a month away, Ely once again is looking to an alumnus to get the Tigers back on the right track.

On Saturday, Principal Karlton Johnson, Athletic Director Connie McGirt and the family at Ely announced that veteran coach Lawal McCray has been hired as head coach.

McCray graduated from Ely in 1986 and attended Bethune-Cookman College. He has extensive coaching experience including his role as a head coach at Boyd Anderson, where in his two seasons, the Cobras were 13-8.
