Katy proves to be too much for Cypress Bay

The Battle at Rhodes Stadium in Katy was billed as an even contest between defending 5A Texas state champion Katy and Cypress Bay. By the end of Saturday’s nationally-televised contest, it was a bit one-sided.

Katy, which lost its first two games of the season, looked very impressive in a 31-6 victory over the Lightning, which failed to get things going offensively and will have to quickly regroup for next Saturday’s district opener at unbeaten Miramar.

Katy running back Michael Webber (143 yards) and quarterback Parker Ray operated behind an offensive line that blew open holes against a smaller Lightning defensive front.

You have to be impressed with this Katy team. They have everything needed to make another run in a state loaded with talent. They will host Cypress Bay again next year.

The trip to the Houston area was quite impressive. The region is loaded with talent.

New York - Cypress Bay Fan

Larry- you forgot a few factors that contributed to Katy routing Cypress Bay. These following factors where brought to the attention of over 50 New Yorkers who watched the Saturday night lights Texas team wallop Cypress Bay by the ESPNU commentators.
2 of the Cypress Bay Team members suffered tragic deaths in their families in less than 72 hours from game time. Not go into details out of respect for their families, but we must remember we are talking about a tight nit group of teenagers (Cypress Bay football team) that got on a plane, traveled over 1000 miles without any grief consoling and a limited amount of support from their community. Make matters worst the knew one of the funeral was today.

I’m not trying to make an excuse for Cypress Bays poor showing but lets be realistic, miss ques, blocks and tackles is not the normal for Cypress Bay. In my opinion, along with the ESPNU commentators and some of the hardest fans in the world to please New Yorkers; the kids (Cypress Bay football team) were carry a lot of weight on their shoulders GAME FACE OR NO GAME FACE. So maybe in the future Herald will allow you some extra lines so you can tell the whole story.
Considering conditions, the booster machine Katy’s has and they were the 2007 State Champions. I think it was a Valiant effort by Cypress Bay

IN 2009 ESPN will show the clash between KATY TEXAS and BYRNES SOUTH CAROLINA.

The game will be during labor day weekend at the NEW DALLAS COWBOY STADIUM and nationally televised on the main ESPN channel.

THIS WILL BE BYRNES 7th straight year that they have traveled---TRAVELED-----out of state to play top competition. They have gone to the following states. Byrnes went to and played 2 teams in OHIO, plus teams in GEORGIA, LOUISANNA, TENNESSEE, ALABAMA during the last 6 years. They also have hosted MANY teams from out of state during this time and won, including 4 teams from Florida. This year Byrnes first game was in GEORGIA against a team that was in the 5A Georgia finals last year.

In fact one of Byrnes biggest gates come from a pre-season scrimmage (With regular game conditions) against the nationally ranked high school from INDEPENDENCE, NC. It regulary draws over 12,000 just for that preseason scrimmage game.

So "Rick The Truth" poster on another blog, Byrnes HAS BEEN TRAVELING to many states and playing--as well as winning. If ESPN sets up the games with the Florida schools at BYRNES then that is all of ESPN doing. ESPN like the set up of Byrnes and the convience of being right next to (just 2 miles from I-85) the main interstate between ATLANTA AND CHARLOTTE. This means that their trucks and people don't have to go back roads to find a tiny high school stadium like many high schools are.

Byrnes is willing and has been able to play anybody, anywhere. The coaches preach that we will play anybody in America, THE FINAL SCORE DOESN'T MATTER. WIN OR LOSE-----just play the game. WIN OR LOSE-----just do your best. WIN OR LOSE-----play with dignity. WIN OR LOSE-----shake the hand of the opposing team and thank them for a good game. It's just a game and it doesn't matter if you WIN OR LOSE as long as you tried your best and played as a team. Because---WIN OR LOSE----life goes on.

katy fan

Going back to the Cy Bay fan who posted about the players deaths. I would like to say for a team that had deaths in the family they didn't give katy much respect. Two days before the game the Cy Bay team mailed a black death wreath to the Katy high school football players fieldhouse. It had some very rude comments and had all the names of the Katy Football team players around it with a RIP sign. So to make excuses about why they lost, well I think the deaths really didn't bothered them or they wouldn't have sent that disrespectful wreath.

BC

Katy Fan - you must be young. That is the OLDEST trick in the book for a coach to motivate his team. Do some snooping around you might find that is wasn't Cypress Bay, but Katy who sent the wreath as "billboard material" to motivate.

Good game and good luck.

D-boiiii

Katy Fan....obv you have never played football before..thats like the oldest trick in the book and if cyp bay ever did something like that they would be punished by their coach..cyp bay is a very respectful team and not a team that talks smack

LC

Katy Fan...Our Cypress Bay players (and by the way it's Cypress Bay not Cy Bay) are nothing but respectful, it's what is demanded of them in order to be on this team, they know they are a reflection of the school, coaches and community. Maybe you should take a look at your own JV team’s disrespectful behaviors before making comments. Your JV boys were spiting on CB’s players helmets, balls and the fans on their sidelines during the game, how’s that for respect. No one is “making excuses” for the loss – Katy has great ball players – I just wonder what the final score would have been had those officials not been blind?

KatyTiger92

JV players have passes and are not allowed on the visitors side....if the refs weren't blind...it would have been 45-6 Katy.

Also...Katy's 2009 schedule is set....no Brynes on the schedule....Unlike the people posting here, the CY Bay......CYPRESS BAY fans were very classy......best of luck on the rest of your season....see ya next year and BEAT MIRIMAR!!!!!!!!!

Schedules ARE NOT FINALIZED Until June 1st each year for the upcoming season. Standard practice in almost every state. Example: June 1st, 2009 for the 2009 season.

ESPN wants BYRNES VS KATY during Labor Day Weekened.
AND THIS IS A FACT.
How much do you want to bet ESPN GETS THIS GAME. Lets put it this way----they were trying to get Summerville Sc high school to be in that event all the way until July 10th of this past year.

SO next year ESPN WANTS BYRNES AND a TEXAS TEAM in the event. THE OFFICAL ANOUNCMENT WILL NOT BE MADE UNTIL MARCH AT THE EARLIEST. KATY IS THE FIRST CHOICE. I AM WILLING TO BET ESPN WILL GET THE DEAL DONE.

Here is last years LABOR DAY MATCHUPS for the game at Texas Stadium---LINK--and notice that last year the TEAMS WERE NOT announced until MARCH.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
What is up with your "....if the refs weren't blind...it would have been 45-6 Katy." comment in your post. Believe me ESPN is trying to get the better Refs available to at least make the games fair. I am VERY INTERESTED IN THAT COMMENT because before the final contract is signed in March we can get a "NO BLIND REFS CLAUSE IN THE CONTRACT!" I'll even let you sit in on the talks with ESPN to explain that.

KatyTiger92

Here in the Texas UIL...the schedules ARE finalized. Being in the Katy program I know that NO ONE has contacted us about a game with Byrnes. After realingment here...all non district games are two year deals, home and away(except Cy-Bay who decided to come to Katy for both game)...the only way a game will happen with Byrnes is if Cypress Bay backed out of next years game.

And the Blind ref comment was in response to a comment here saying the 31-6 score was the result of "Blind refs"

First of all, I will not get into an "IS TOO, IS NOT" ---or---"WILL TOO, WILL NOT" Debate.

Go to your Texas High School League rulebook. It is online. READ IT.

Also, as one who has dealt with ESPN for the last 4 years, I know what is going on.

NEXT YEAR THERE WILL BE A LABOR DAY KIRK HERBSTREIT FOOTBALL CHALLENGE AT THE NEW TEXAS STADIUM OF THE DALLAS COWBOYS.
SEE THIS YEARS WEBSITE about the event:

http://www.herbstreitfootballseries.com/

NEXT YEAR BYRNES WILL BE THERE and WE REALLY DON'T CARE WHO IT IS AGAINST. BUT I DO KNOW WHO IS IN TALKS WITH ESPN RIGHT NOW.

Other things you may not know. MOST Teachers work with 1 year contracts. The same applies for any athletic schedule. AS A TEACHER I HOPE TO TEACH ANOTHER 15 years, BUT I WORK ON A YEAR TO YEAR BASIS AT THE PRINCIPAL's REQUEST---------------------SEE YOUR TEXAS HIGH SCHOOL RULE BOOK ONLINE------------Lets see what you may not be aware of or are aware of. Realignment happens--we agree on that. So basically you agree to play each team----region and non-region at HOME AND AWAY for the next 2 years unless alternatives are agreed upon. This is more verbal and the way things are done in almost every state. THE ACTUAL SIGNED CONTRACTS ON A YEAR TO YEAR BASIS is not official until posted by the state high school league. Some states have June 1st others July 1st.

SO we agree here----YES you may know that you will play team "A" on the road next year because you played them at home this year. BUT THE OFFICIAL SIGNED AND APPROVED CONTRACTS ARE NOT VALID UNTIL THE STATE HIGH SCHOOL LEAGUE APPROVES IT ON A YEAR TO YEAR BASIS. This is clearly written in the Texas high school league rulebook online. SO your 2009 schedule will not be OFFICIALLY approved until the summer of 2009 at the date set by the state of TEXAS high school rulebook---IT IS ONLINE if you don't have one.

That being said and having dealt with ESPN for TV games the last 4 years. ESPN usually gets the games they want. Sure this will mean that a team will have to give up one of their games already scheduled.

Here is a list of Texas TV games this year with many set up like this. If you look at their schedules, teams were dropped and replaced for the big interstate tournaments. So a HOME AND AWAY SERIES that a fan thought was going to happen, like KatyTiger92, DID NOT HAPPEN.

http://www.txprepsfootball.com/tvschedule.htm

So first of all, that team you are taking off your schedule needs a game. A first class program like KATY OR BYRNES would make sure that ESPN (OR other TV SPONSOR) would find the dropped team a makeup game perhaps in the same set of interstate games during that weekend. If this happens, all teams are pretty cool. AND THIS WILL NOT BE ANNOUNCED UNTIL THE SPRING OF 2009.
If that team "A" can find their own game against a team of their choice, ESPN usually provides some financial donation for their trouble.

The cash ESPN is showing, is getting bigger each year. So Byrnes really does not care who ends up playing with us in TEXAS STADIUM. IF THEY CAN'T GET THE DEAL DONE WITH KATY---THEY WILL GET SOMEBODY ELSE FROM TEXAS. SOMEBODY WILL WORK OUT A DEAL----------------AND SOME FAN LIKE KatyTiger92 will see a schedule changed when it is officially posted by the TEXAS HIGH SCHOOL LEAGUE NEXT SUMMER.

BYRNES WILL BE THERE LABOR DAY WEEKEND 2008.
Don't really care who. The bigger the better.

At film night last night I talked to coach J from Katy. No one has contacted him about the herbstreit classic and even if they did, he would decline. The Cy-Bay deal was a last minute thing because after being realigned in a six team district, Katy was left with 9 games. He was going to decline the Cy-Bay game because it was a two year deal, but being a great Coach, Coach G from Cypress Bay decided to come to Texas both games. Coach J said he not interested in the Herbie or OOS matchup because the travel limitations of players and the scheduleing conflicts that it causes on the subvaristy levels. And the 2009 schedule which is on my desk says Katys Non District schedule is the exact same as this year, but the home/away reversed except for Cypress Bay.

I'm pretty sure their are several schools in the Dallas/Fort Worth area that will fill that spot in a heartbeat and expect Byrnes will accept the challange.

justlooking

I have no idea how "Jan" determines that Byrnes plays Katy in 2009 ... absolutely will not happen. The Texas High School League you refer to is actually the UIL (University Interscholastic League) and KatyTiger is correct: in an alignment year (2008 was year one of a two year alignment) all schools receive a letter from the UIL giving the pertinent dates. After realignment was released in early Feb 2008, the schools were allowed to contract all games on Feb 22 or after. It was left to the "District Committee" to determine --- and I can tell you that Katy is contracted for 2009. It is true unforeseen things come up and schedules change but nothing is in place to produce a Katy/Byrnes matchup. Byrnes was actually a replacement for West Monroe when they backed out of the Herbie. They were invited for both years -- 2008 & 2009 but could only play in 2009. The possibility of the Herbie being played in Texas next year is hanging by a thread. With the economic situation, sponsors are dropping out and it may cause the Herbie to shrink to Ohio only and a smaller number of teams. This past labor day weekend, the Monday games actually were the property of the National Football Foundation and not the Herbie -- the TX Herbie sought help when they ran into financial difficulties and were bailed out. If, by some miracle, the TX Herbie survives and those teams that played in the NFF games are included, Byrnes could play someone like Trinity, but more than likely it would be some of the original TX Herbie teams like Cedar Hill or Arlington Bowie (I only hope it is not one of the less attractive teams like Timberview or Justin Northwest --- but it could be.
