2A FINAL: Jacksonville Bolles 49, Gulliver Prep 20!

ORLANDO - For the eighth time in the school's brilliant football history, Jacksonville Bolles captured a state championship on Friday night at the Citrus Bowl.

The 49-20 win over Miami Gulliver Prep gave head coach Corky Rogers (376-58) yet another state title to add to the ones he and the Bulldogs captured in 1990, 1993, 1995, 1998, 2002, 2004 and 2006.

The undefeated (14-0) Bulldogs opened the 2A state title game by moving in for the first score with 6:46 left in the first quarter on a 4-yard run by junior Jawan Jamison.

The Bulldogs increased the lead to 14-0 at the 2:22 mark if the first quarter when senior Stephen Barnett, committed to Tulane University, scored from the 8.

The second quarter began much the way the first quarter ended when the Bulldogs scored on a 26-yard pass play from Chandler Carr to fellow junior Jay Herndon, which would click three times on the evening.

The Raiders got on the scoreboard with 3:31 left in the first half when Carr was intercepted by Artice Kellum who returned the ball 27 yards for a touchdown. Kellum had a huge night for the Raiders.

Bolles answered the Raiders's score when the connection of Carr and Herndon clicked again. This time from 28 yards out at the 1:54 mark.

The Bulldogs came out after half and once again showed why they were regarded as one of the best in the nation when Barnett went 31 yards for a 35-7 lead.

After Connor Vernon fumbled the ball, Carr and Herndon connected from 30 yards out and the Bulldogs continued pour it on the Raiders.

With 2:02 left in the third quarter, Jordan Garside got in on the scoring parade with a 7-yard touchdown run just before Darian Mallary's 71-yard run to cut the lead to 49-14.

The Raiders closed out the scoring with :45 left in the game on a 1-yard run by senior Frankie Telfort.

Darian---Tsk0Tsk--FIU picked HIM over Brandon Oliver of Southridge. These guys played low-level 2A ball ALL year...It just shows what $$ can buy,,Hearald interest stories,,,inflated stats,,,bogus offerings...The only kid to show up last nite was strauss & He played 'scared' the entire 1st half& 3rd qtr---Y'all hearld pseudo-highschool football reporters are A JOKE!!!And sorry excuses for prognosticators..You should stick to soccer& baseball

To Ms Rob

I dont know what game you were watching but Artice Kellum the DB for Gulliver showed up to play last night. Also Mallary showed why FIU offered him a scholarship IMO, he was just a non factor because they played 3-5 TD's behind basically the whole game.
Jax Bolles is a great team and could probably beat all the teams in the 305 except NW, Central, Columbus, BTW & maybe Carol City, Killian & Pace. Gulliver is not as bad as they looked, they just ran into a superior opponent is all. They (Bolles) are well coached & saw the mismatch their WR-Herndon had on Gullivers DB's & took advantage of it. Well coached teams do that, find the mismatches & take advantage of them. They are strong & took out Madison in the Semis who were ranked #10 Nationally. Trust me Gulliver doesn't see competition like this during the yr & needs to schedule teams like Columbus, BTW, Pace, Edison, Pahokee & Glades Central in '09 for their non-conference games if they wanna compete against either Madison or Bolles next yr. That and go recruit a half dozen blue chip players from Columbus, Gables, Killian, Pace & Chaminade. Both Madison & Bolles are loaded for next yr too.

MsRob - you're a joke and you know nothing about football. Gulliver has great position players but they do not have the size on the offensive and defensive lines to match up against a team like Bolles. Both lines were completely outmatched by Bolles' size. Bolles has lineman the size of top 6A programs. Gulliver could not get its running game going because Bolles' defensive front was too much. Gulliver's defensive line was pushed around by Bolles' huge offensive line which just opened the running game wide open. Once they got Gulliver focused on the run, they threw the long pass.

Bolles is an incredible program that is basically an all star team from the South. They are a boarding school where kids go to live (and play football) and they draw from the best players all over the South, and not just Jacksonville.

Sorry, DieHard, but only Northwestern and St. Thomas Aquinas are going to give Bolles a game this year. You are right though, Gulliver needs to start scheduling a few tougher teams for their non-conference games so they have already seen this kind of competition once they get into the late playoffs. And they need to develop more size for their lineman. Hope they will use this as a stepping stone for better things to come.

football guy

Bolles is Northwestern of Jacksonville and they are a public school. By pop. they really are a 2a school. GP needs to play big schools in Dade. Pace and Chaminade does, so their is not excuse for them not beating Bolles

DieHard 305 Fan

Bolles is a private school & one of the most elite in the country. They recruit more than NW, Columbus & STA combined. They get players from North FL, Georgia, Alabama South Carolina etc. If you wanna read more about them go to www.wikipedia.com then enter Bolles School. Bolles has also won State 9 times since 1986, by far the most FL. You realize that's more than NW & Carol City combined. When you think Bolles, think STA in Ft Lauderdale and multiply that by 10. Gulliver was simply outmatched w the All Stars of Bolles, however Madison, who is a public school up north that lost to Bolles in the Semis could've easily beaten Gulliver & their small OL, DL. Gulliver has the skill players, they're just not big & physical enough to stay on the field w teams like these. If they want to be competitive & win State #1) they need to get bigger real quick cause Bolles & Madison are loaded next yr & #2) they need to schedule tougher non conference games than Bay Point, Key West & Zephyrhills. Playing Pace, Edison & Columbus this yr would've helped them out immensely vs Bolles in the Finals.

First, lets stop making excuses for Gulliver Preps loss to Jacksonville Bolles. a loss is a loss.Gulliver was very fortunate to have played there best football game against Archbhisop Carroll who had injuries on there defensive line which dominated Gulliver preps offinsive line in the regular season and won.Carroll went to Jacksonville undermanned and played Bolles and barring some turnovers could have won that football game. The bottom line is we can come up with all types of excuses as to why a team loss to another, on any given day an inferior team can muster up the attitude and courage and defeat a far superior team. which is somthing Gulliver Prep lacked in the game against Bolles. Gulliver Prep was awe struck when they came out to play against Bolles thus the 21-0 start of the game. That type of thing occur when you play teams like Westlake Prep and Zephyrhills.

dadon

it seems there is some jealousy when it comes to gulliver prep, they had a outstanding season.these young men did not complain not one time about there loss, you just have other schools mad because they got to the state and they didn't Archbishop Carroll, you can't make no excuses that some of your players was hurt you barely beat them earlier this season and they had players hurt but they didn't complain,so stop crying because it's over now.P.S. Ms.Rob FIU chose Darian Mallary over Brandon Oliver because he is a better athlete and back than him ask Brandon he will tell you himself,he is better than half of da players out there so don't be a hater get some buisness.

I know this is from last year, but a few myths on here about Bolles. Only one player on the team was a boarder last year. While the team does come from all over the Jax area, most of the players have been lifetime Jax residents. The size of the offensive line....280, 240, 210, 190, and 185....hardly a 6A sized unit. Gulliver had some great players but did not have the supporting players that Bolles has. Nobody likes to hear it, but Bolles has some talent, but they also have a bunch of kids that are overly talented but nobody works harder in the weight room yearround than Bolles. Also, may have more longevity on their coaching staff than any other school in Florida. If you think they are an all star team, come time them in the 40 sometime. We have maybe 3 or 4 guys that can run a 4.6 or better. Coaching and work ethic will usually prevail.
