3A FINAL: Cocoa 7, Tallahassee Godby 6 (OT)

ORLANDO -Cody Bell missed four field goals on Friday afternoon, but his extra point in overtime was the only thing that mattered to the Cocoa Tigers.

Bell, a sophomore, booted the extra point in overtime to give the Tigers a 3A state title and a 7-6 win over Tallahassee Godby in a game that certainly did not live up to the pre-game hype that promised an offensive show.

When senior Anthony Bell took it in from the 5 in overtime, the game was tied at 6. Then, Bell, who had the opportunity to give Cocoa (14-1) a cushion earlier in the game, booted the extra point and the game winner.

In the first overtime, Godby got the ball first and scored on a 10-yard pass play from senior A.J. Graham to FSU-bound Willie Downs. Billy Mueller's point after was blocked by senior Anthony Session and the Cougars led, 6-0.

The game, which was dictated by turnovers and mistakes also showcased junior safety E.J. Johnson, who had three interceptions, tying a state record with Bobby Bennett of Tampa Blake in 1969 against Leesburg. He also had two pass breakups.

Only Frostproof's win over Jacksonville Trinity Christian in 1999, and Jacksonville Bolles win over Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna in 2002, 6-0 games, were lower scoring.

this was possibly the worst State Championship game ever played. It looked like one of those sloppy 5-2, 9-6 South Dade/Homestead games.
Godby had the better offensive playmakers but had 6 turnovers incl 4Ints. They totally abandoned the running game and were trying to go deep to their 2 DIV1 WR recruits, but Cocoas best 2 defensive players were their DB's & they picked the ball off at will. Godby had a good D, but overall it was awful coaching on Godbys part
Cocoa had a solid D as well, but offensively had no passing game at all & looked lost on offense once their run was stopped. Their QB fumbled away an easy TD in the 1st QTR on the 2 and it went downhill from there. Also Godby tried to give the game away by committing turnovers deep in their own territory but the Cocoa kicker missed 4 FG's (3 that were easy chip shots). Better coached than Godby but not by much.
It was only fitting that this game end 0-0 in regulation and the outcome be decided by a 5-5" 100lb kicker who would have a hard tme making the girls volleyball team at his school. Kid looked like he belonged in the band & not on he field. Congrats to Cocoa for their 1st State Title in a very forgettable game. After watching this game I have to wonder how Godby ever beat St Augustine & how Cocoa ever beat Pace. Also you gotta wonder what undefeated Nature Coast would've done if they hadn't been thrown out of the State playoffs for fighting w their cross town rivals the last week of the reg season. A sorry excuse for a State Title Game. Bolles, STA or Pahokee would've beat either one of these teams 60-0.
