Joe McNamara out for the season

After a tremendous spring and summer that included a commitment to attend Stanford University on a football scholarship, Cypress Bay offensive lineman Joe McNamara had been looking forward to his senior year.

During the last week of two-a-day practices, the 6-2, 275-pounder saw his senior season evaporate in just one play when he partially tore his ACL.

“I planted and then my knee got caught and I heard a pop,” said McNamara, who was one of the top linemen in the state. “While I knew it was bad, I really didn’t think it was going to be this bad.”

While he initially took the news hard, McNamara, who will undergo surgery to repair the knee on his birthday, Sept. 9, understands that it could have been a lot worse, and although he will miss his final football season, he has a lot to look forward to.

Informing the coaches at Stanford about his injury, all are optimistic that McNamara will be back better than ever over the next six months.

“We told the coaches and they want me to get stronger and come out there next year ready to go,” McNamara said. “I just have to be positive about the entire thing. Stuff like this happens and I have to deal with it. I can help our team in so many other ways this season.”

McNamara, who wrestled last year for his father Pat, didn’t rule out trying to work hard enough to get back in February for districts. Although he would have to be cleared by the doctors, it will be one of those wait and see kind of things.

His father, who expects to have a very good wrestling team this year, was a little hesitant about seeing his son come back so soon. But he also knows that it may be the best thing for him if his knee completely heals over the next five to six months.

“We’ll have to see how the surgery goes first,” Pat McNamara said. “Then, we will monitor the progress of the knee. I told Joe if he does everything that he is told to do and the doctor clears him, getting back on the mat may be a great thing for him. But I am not making any promises.”

Basford is going to Wake Forest

When Elite Scouting Services President Charles Fishbein saw Jacksonville Bishop Kenny tight end Neil Basford last year, he felt the 6-4, 230-pounder was one of the players to watch in the state of Florida.

On Friday, Basford become the sixth Floridian to verbally commit to Wake Forest. Joining Pahokee’s Zachary Allen and Merrill Noel, Boca Raton quarterback Eddie Sullivan, Cape Coral Ida Baker tight end Jonathan Garcia and Jacksonville Bolles safety Desmond Cooper, Basford will continue a steady pipeline from the Sunshine State to Winston Salem.

“Talented football player,” said Fishbein. “One of those young men who seemed to improve every time we watched him play. Wake Forest is so in tune to getting top Florida talent.”
It was Fishbein and he ESS staff who actually put Basford’s name out to a number of colleges last season after watching him and talking with his coaches.

In that time, schools such as Arkansas, FSU, Virginia Tech, South Carolina, Miami and Illinois all showed a lot of interest in Basford after he caught 16 passes a registered 4 touchdowns last season.

McCullough headed to Iowa State

When North Marion head football coach Craig Damon talked about his upcoming class, there were a number of athletes he talked about.

From linemen Courtland Thomas and Michael Vannuci to safety Brandon Carr and quarterback Chuckie Looney, Damon was complimentary about them all. But one players seemed to standout from the rest.
“T.J. McCullough is a young man who can make a lasting impression,” Damon said. “His speed (4.47) and ability to play both receiver and defensive back.”

On Tuesday, Terraine “T.J.” McCullough told Iowa State that he will be a Cyclone, and the 6-2, 190-pounder, who will be a three-year starter this season for the Colts, ended speculation that also included in state schools FAU, UCF and FIU, as well as Rutgers.

“It’s a great fit for T.J.,” said Charles Fishbein of Elite Scouting Services. “We had the opportunity to watch him play over the past few years and his speed and ability to make plays really stood out.”

McCullough is the first player Iowa State received a commitment from in Florida so far this year, but the Cyclones do have Floridians David Sims (Gainesville), Kennard Banks (Dwyer), Allen Bell (Tallahassee Rickards), Josh Raven (Cape Coral Mariner), Jansen Watson (Kissimmee Osceola), Deon Broomfield (Palm Bay Bayside), Leonard Johnson (Largo), Bo Williams (Oakland Park Northeast), Jeremiah Schwartz (Orlando Edgewater), Earl Brooks (Deerfield Beach), Roosevelt Maggit (Dwyer), Kevin Hamlin (Dwyer), Willie Scott (Orlando Jones), Scott Haughton (Sanford Seminole) and Donnie Jennert (St. Cloud) on the roster.

Former longtime Broward County athletics director Noe passes away at 80

Broward County lost one of its longest tenured public servants when former Broward County Director of Athletics and Florida High School Athletic Hall of Fame member Clarence "Doc'' Noe died Tuesday.

   Noe was 80.

Noe had been battling congestive heart failure and kidney failure the past few years.

As director of athletics and commissioner of the Broward County Athletic Association,
Noe was responsible for overseeing the diverse athletic programs of more than 20 of the
fastest growing senior high schools in Florida.

Noe was born in 1929 in Nabb, Indiana, graduated from New Washington High in 1947, and
served two years in the U.S. Air Force. In 1957, Noe taught and coached for 10 years at
Fort Lauderdale Stranahan until he moved to the county office to supervise the county's
driver education, health and physical education programs until his appointment to the
position of director of athletics in 1972, a position he held until 1996.

A former track coach, Noe also served as meet referee for the FHSAA state track and
field championships for 30 years.

Noe is survived by his wife, Beverly, four children, and seven grandchildren. A
memorial service will be held Saturday, September 5, at 2 p.m. at John Knox Village in
Pompano Beach.

Aquinas gearing up for Ohio as unanimous No. 1; Northwestern 6th in USA TODAY

As I'm sure you heard and expected, St. Thomas Aquinas has been tabbed No. 1 in the country by every major poll.

And Aquinas wasn't alone in the top 10.

Miami Northwestern, winners of 43 of its past 45 games, open the season ranked sixth.
Aquinas and Northwestern are the only Florida teams ranked.

Aquinas, which in the past month has been tabbed the nation's top team by ESPN,
Rivals.com and the National Prep poll, opens the season next Saturday at Columbus, Ohio in
a game against Upper Arlington (OH) as part of the Kirk Herbstreit Series. The game is at
noon and will be broadcast live on ESPN. The Raiders will also play a nationally-televised
home game Oct.‚2 against No.‚2 Byrnes (S.C.).

Northwestern has one nationally-televised game Oct.‚8 against longtime rival Miami
Central at 7:30 p.m. at FIU Stadium on ESPN2.
