Dwellie Striggles shuffles off to Buffalo

Dwellie Striggles came to University School this year from Dillard for a number of reasons. Education was the No. 1 priority. The other was a chance to play for head coach Roger Harriott an his impressive staff.

On Monday, the 5-10, 175-pound defensive back watched his dedication and hard work pay off as he committed to attend the University of Buffalo, marking the third player from the Davie school to choose a Division 1 program in the past month.

Following in the footsteps of teammates David Perry (Miami) and Brice Hawkes, who committed to Syracuse University last week, Striggles will take his talents to a program that is much like University School, with former Nebraska quarterback Turner Gil continuing to make progress.

"The program is so much like what I experienced this year at University School," said Striggles. "A family-oriented atmosphere with people who care about what you do – on and off the playing field. That was the major selling point for me."

A track standout and basketball player at Dillard, Striggles made an immediate impact at University School with the ability to play on either side of the ball. His 4.4 (40) speed was also a huge asset to the success of a young program this season.

"Dwellie came here with a commitment to being better all around and he succeeded," said Harriott. "Having the opportunity to play Division 1 football and get a quality education is something that everyone strives for. We have no doubt that he will continue to make an impact for years to come."

Brice Hawkes is headed to Syracuse

Last spring, Brice Hawkes was just over 6-foot and weighed in at 180 pounds. While colleges were watching this University School athlete, many were not sure what position he would play.

Over the past seven months, Hawkes began to mature, and from a project that schools were hesitant to look at, he is now a 6-3, 205-pounder, who has played everything from defensive end and outside linebacker to receiver. On Wednesday, Hawkes the player that many were not taking a chance with, became a prospect when he committed to attend Syracuse University and its growing program.

"I have been telling people the past two years to watch out for this young man," said head coach Roger Harriott. "I knew that there was something special about him, and the thing that people still cannot comprehend is he isn't finished growing. His father is 6-5!"

Harriott believes that Syracuse got one of the big steals of the Class of 2010 in south Florida, urging that this is a player who has only scratched the surface as far as talent is concerned.

"He has been one of our most productive players this year," Harriott said. "Colleges such as LSU, Buffalo, Colorado State and Tulane have come through, but never offered. Syracuse just loves what he is now and what he will become in the future."

The Suns, which already have a verbal commitment for defensive end David Perry from the University of Miami, are expected to have more players who continue to fly way beneath the radar make college choices over the next few months.

Rabasa invited to U.S. Army All-American camp

Columbus junior defensive end Anthony Rabasa has been invited to attend the U.S.
Army National Combine in San Antonio in January 2010. Rabasa, a three-year starter for
Columbus, is the first of a few Dade juniors that could be invited to the event, which is
held annually in association with the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.

It is the first chance for the nation's top underclassmen to demonstrate their physical
talent in front of college football's top scouting organizations, as well as the U.S. Army
All-American Bowl Selection Committee, which features national recruiting analyst Tom
Lemming and Rivals.com.

Joyner, Riggs selected to Under Armour game

First, offensive lineman Brandon Linder and kicker Michael Palardy found out they were headed to San Antonio.

On Thursday morning, defensive back Cody Riggs and wide receiver/kick returner Lamarcus Joyner accepted an invitation to Tampa.

Riggs and Joyner became the latest players from the St. Thomas Aquinas football team to be invited to a national high school football All-Star game when the duo was selected to the 2010 Under Armour All-America game.

The game will take place Jan. 2 at 11 a.m. at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg and will be televised by ESPN.

They join Linder and Palardy, who earlier this month were invited to the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio Jan. 9.

Riggs has six pass break-ups, an interception and three blocked kicks this season. And Joyner has 746 all-purpose yards and eight touchdowns, including three on kickoff returns, this season for the defending national champion Raiders.

Aquinas closes its regular season this weekend against Cypress Bay at home Friday at 8 p.m., before hosting Coral Springs at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20 in the Region 4-5A quarterfinals.
