Dwyer is Beef O'Brady's No. 1 team

FORT MYERS — The Dwyer Panthers, Class 4A champions – have been awarded the top spot in the Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Top 25 – Florida’s only all-classification poll.

Dwyer defeated previous #2 and unbeaten Niceville 42-14 to win the school’s first state championship in football. Tampa Plant finished second after downing Bradenton Manatee 21-14 in the 5A championship while the state’s only unbeaten team – Cocoa (2A champion) – finished third.

It was the third time in the 15-year history of the Top 25 that the #1 met the #2 in the state championship game. In 2003 Chaminade Madonna Prep, then ranked #2, defeated #1 Madison County 27-0. In 2006 #1 Lakeland defeated #2 St. Thomas Aquinas 45-42.

Miramar, the 6A champion, claimed the fourth place spot followed by Pensacola, which won the 3A title. Jacksonville Bolles (2B champion), which won the first Top 25 trophy in 1995, finished sixth followed by Manatee, Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas (5A), Miami Central (6A) and Niceville.
Cocoa and Bolles were the only two state champions to both repeat and play a state champion in the regular season. Cocoa defeated Bolles 44-37 in overtime and will face the Bulldogs again in 2010.

The Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Trophy will be presented to Dwyer in January. The panel is made up of sportswriters and broadcasters who cover high school sports throughout Florida.
