Jake Wheeler chooses Maryland

While Christmas gifts are being exchanged throughout the world this Friday, perhaps the biggest gift that the University of Maryland will receive is 6-8, 240 pounds.

The day before Christmas saw the Terrapins reel in American Heritage Plantation defensive end Jake Wheeler, who despite his impressive size, has been flying beneath the radar screen the past two years.

The younger brother of University of Miami freshman Jared Wheeler, Jake actually began playing varsity football under Chris Amos at Sheridan Hills Christian School as a seventh grader.

While basketball has occupied more of his time during the past five years, Wheeler has grown into the defensive end position as well as playing some tight end.

“Having coached Jake since he began, I can tell you that this is one impressive athlete who certainly will get better and better,” said Amos, who is now Biloxi, Ms. “He is quick, athletic and understands what it takes to succeed at the next level. This is a huge pickup for Maryland.”

Amos believes that many other schools who were hesitant to take a chance on Wheeler will be surprised at how impressive he can be on the football field.

Wheeler has also looked at schools such as Miami, Alabama, Syracuse and Duke.
