Beef O'Brady's State Poll - Week 4

JACKSONVILLE - St. Thomas Aquinas (5A - Fort Lauderdale) remains the #1 team in the Beef O Brady s Top 25, Florida s only all-classification poll. However, there is a new #2 after the fourth week of high school football.

The Raiders collected four first place votes and 262 overall points, easily distancing themselves from Cocoa (2A), which garnered five first place votes and 248 points. The Tigers took the #2 spot from Palm Beach Gardens Dwyer (4A) which fell to fourth behind Seffner Armwood (4A). Pensacola slipped from third to fifth.

Bradenton Manatee (5A) remained sixth, with one first place vote, followed by Tampa Jefferson (3A). Orlando Dr. Phillips (6A) and Miami Northwestern (6A) flipped spots from 8th and 9th, while Miami Central (6A) was tenth. The overall teams remained in the poll, as no team in the Top 25 lost last week. This week promises to be different.

St. Thomas Aquinas hosts Camden County (GA) a national power that defeated Miami Central earlier this year 45-42. #3 Armwood travels to Dads Stadium to face #17 Plant. Ninth-ranked Miami Northwestern takes on #12 Miami Washington and then faces #10 Miami Central next week.

Herron, Watson and Taylor on radio

Hsfootballpage1
As we approach the halfway point of the regular season, the Maroone High School Gridiron Report kicks in into high gear this week with an impressive guest list on Wednesday night (9-10) on WQAM (560 AM).

Larry Blustein and Mike Levine will welcome in Camden County, Ga. Hall of Fame head football coach Jeff Herron, Miami Booker T. Washington senior defensive tackle Elkino Watson and Cooper City High first year head coach Art Taylor to this week's show.

CAMDEN COUNTY ON A ROLL
When many football fans think about high school football in the state of Georgia, schools such as Valdosta, Warner Robbins, Brooks County, Macon County and several other top programs always join the conversation. But one of the elite programs that gets it done year after year are the Wildcats of Camden County.

Already knocking off nationally-rated South Florida power, Miami Central, earlier this season, Camden County has earned a national rating, and when they head to Fort Lauderdale on Friday for a clash with the Raiders, winning will be a priority for a team that is used to being in the national spotlight.

The two-time defending state champions head south with plenty of talent including seniors, QB Joel Ruiz (6-foot-4, 210 pounds) and kicker Matt Ehasz. Another team leader is sophomore sensation J.J. Green (5-9, 165), who started 15 games last year as a freshman — which was a first for any Herron-coached teams.

In addition, you have RB Kenny Hutchinson (blazing speed), WR Jalen Simmons (6-foot-3), DB Vishawn Williams, QB Brice Ramsey and LB Quan Brock.

WATSON IS THE REAL DEAL
With so many key losses from last year, it's amazing that Booker T. Washington has been able to remain one of the top 3A teams in the state, and at the center of it all is Watson, who is easily one of the state's top players.

The 6-2, 265-pound Watson has already been offered by such schools as Duke, UCF, Georgia Tech, USF, Louisville and Minnesota to name just a few.

Watson and his teammates will have their hands full on Saturday night as they lineup against the No. 1 6A team in he state, Miami Northwestern, at Traz Powell Stadium!

TURNAROUND TAYLOR
No matter where he has been in his brilliant coaching career, Taylor has been able to get the most out of his teams. This year, the veteran coach landed in Cooper City, and after the first three weeks of the season, his Cowboys are unbeaten as he has been able to build in a short period of time. Last year, Cooper City was able to win just once.

Taylor and his Cowboys will have a huge challenge this week in the Annual "Hog Bowl" against Western.

Northwestern football makes history!

Jaline1
On Thursday, while Miami Northwestern was beating Hialeah Miami Lakes 38-12 in a District 13-6A football game at Milander Stadium in Hialeah, the Bulls made history with this tradition-rich program.

With over 30 players suspended from the game for an altercation that took place the week before, the Bulls were left short-handed - to say the least.

While a number of offensive players, including University of Miami commits Eli Rogers and Teddy Bridgewater played on both sides of the ball, to make up for the loss of nearly the entire defensive unit, it was also a week off for the junior varsity program.

With the number of varsity players barely reaching 25, head coach Billy Rolle called upon some ninth and 10 graders from the junior varsity squad to come up for the game. One of those athletes called up for the game was Jaline DeJesus, a sophomore defensive back.

When DeJesus dressed and took part in the warmups, she was the first female in Northwestern High history ever to dress for a varsity football game. When she entered the contest with less than a minute left and played left cornerback, DeJesus accomplished another first - playing for the No. 1 rated 6A team in Florida!

"I told our players before the game, they had the chance to be part of history," said Rolle. "She works hard and deserved the opportunity to dress just like the other athletes we brought up for the game."

The Bulls remained unbeaten as Rogers, Bridgewater and the rest of the team rolled over the Trojans, and at least for one day, DeJesus had the chance to run with the Bulls!
