Beef O'Brady's State Poll - Week 7

Beefs
JACKSONVILLE - Some shake ups in the bottom portion of the Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Top 25, but the top 10 remained exactly the same after seven weeks of football in the sunshine state.

St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, 5A) remains the state’s overall #1 in the only all-classification football poll in Florida. Cocoa, the defending 2A champion and riding a 25 game winning streak, remains #2 followed by Seffner Armwood (4A), Bradenton Manatee (5A) and Palm Beach Gardens Dwyer (4A).

The second five also stayed the same with Orlando Dr. Phillips (6A), Pensacola (3A), Miami Central (6A), Tampa Jefferson (3A) and Lakeland (5A) rounding out the top 10.

In the second ten, Miami Columbus was the big mover, jumping seven spots to #15 after a 29-8 win over previously ranked #14 Miami Northwestern. With four teams in the second ten losing, there was some shuffling. Miami Northwestern fell out of the Top 25 for the first time since 2004. Melbourne Palm Bay and Clearwater Countryside entered the Top 25 for the first time this season, replacing the Bulls and Pompano Beach Ely, which also lost and dropped from the rankings.

Rabasa, Fernandez and Bratton on radio

Hsfootballpage1
As we head toward Week 8 of the season, every game becomes more important, and as the stakes rise, the Maroone High School Gridiron Report will be there every step of the way.

On Wednesday night (9-10) on WQAM (560 AM - www.wqam.com), Larry Blustein and Mike Levine have an informative and exciting show planned.

Standout Anthony Rabasa from the third rated Columbus Explorers will be on hand along with the Miami Herald's own Andre Fernandez, and former Northwestern High and University of Miami standout Melvin Bratton.

HEADED TO NOTRE DAME
Rabasa, who guided his team to an impressive win over Northwestern last week, has been a catalyst this season for a team that is loaded with talent.

The 6-3, 220-pound defensive end was offered by over 30 schools before choosing the rich tradition at Notre Dame.

As the Explorers head for this week's district showdown with Coral Park, all eyes will be on Rabasa, as he and his teammates are out to show that last week's win over the Bulls is a sign of things to come in 2010.

LINING UP THE PLAYOFFS
Nobody has a pulse on all sports in South Florida like Fernandez, who leads one of the top prep sports staffs in the nation.

Fernandez will set the picture for Miami-Dade and Broward teams who are headed to the playoffs - with huge games over the next two weeks.

Fernandez has a popular prediction page on Tuesdays, where he has turned out to be one of the most accurate around.

In addition, he has been to Texas twice already this year, covering local teams.

BRATTON STILL A POPULAR FIGURE
It's been over 20 years since the University of Miami began its impressive talent pipeline from Miami-Dade County to Coral Gables.

Still following the Hurricanes as well as some of the recruits in the area - especially from his alma mater, Bratton will take a look at the recruiting of today vs. during his time that was truly one of the most active - without the internet and hoards of media!

Bratton starred in the 1987 NCAA National Championship against the Oklahoma Sooners. However, he blew out his knee, an injury that may have cost him an estimated one million dollars in the NFL. At the end of his career, he held the Hurricanes' record for career touchdowns with 33.

Bratton was originally drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the 6th round of the 1988 NFL Draft, but never signed a contract with the Dolphins. So he was drafted again in 1989 by the Denver Broncos in the 7th round. He played just two years in the NFL both of which were with the Denver Broncos. He rushed for 190 yards and 4 touchdowns on 57 carries in his brief career. He also added 345 receiving yards and 4 touchdowns on 39 catches. He also returned 5 kickoffs for total of 56 yards averaging 11.2 yards. He retired after the 1990 season, never really regaining his full abilities to run the ball from his knee injury in 1988 Orange Bowl.
